Moves Hood
John Kirby, vice president and
area manager for the Oregon
Washington Telephone Company,
announced this week that Dick
Hood, district manager for the
Oregon Washington Telephone
Company and the California-Oregon
Telephone Company serving
the Tulelake Merrill area, has
been promoted to the newly cre
ated position of Traffic Engineer
for the Oregon-Washington Sys
tem. It is anticipated that the
Hoods will move to Hood Itiver,
Oregon, early in .lime.
Replacing Hood will be Rich
ard Ackerman, Central Office
technician now stationed with the
White City division.
Ackerman has been employed
by the company for the past fif
teen years and has experience in
all areas of telephone work. He
is a native of Klamath County
and is a graduate of Klamath
Union High School. He served in
the Marine Corps in World War
11 and the Korean War. Ackerman
plans to move with his wife and
one son to Merrill as soon as
possible alter the end of the
school year.

Convention
The Degree nf Honor District
Convention, held in Bend on May
7, was attended by 27 women
from the Klamath Falls Lodge
No. 108, who chartered a bus for
the trip.
The all-day program opened
with a luncheon. L'.'owed by an
afternoon business iiieeting, 6: 30
p.m. banquet, and an evening ses
sion at 8 p m. Clara B. Gcrtson.

Normal Pair
Said 'Dull'
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (UPII-A team
of psychiatrists said today that if
you think you are a normal mar
ried couple, chances are you're
'dull."
The team reported to the 119th
annual convention of the Ameri
can Psychiatric Association on a
survey of 50 ninth grade boys
who proved to be perfectly
normal.
Twelve years later, the psychia
trists said, they surveyed these
same men and their wives. The
couples were well-adjusted and
satisfied with their position in
life.
"Such a population would pro
mote stability or a firm back-bone1
of the country," said Dr. Jules S.
Golden, associate professor at:
Albany. N. Y Medical College!
and one of the team members. -
But he added he had "mixed'
feelings" about the situation.
Golden said he felt the couples'
lives were "essentially mundane
and dull." They had little imagin
ation and few interests.
Dr. Reuben Silver, a psycholo
gist at the college, and Dr.
Nathan Mandel, of the Minnesota
Department of Corrections, joined
Golden in the survey they made
in Minneapolis, Minn.
One of the tests the authors
used in their survey was to ask
the couples what tlvcy would do
wilh $5 million. In general, the
couples said they would buy a
house or invest the money. This,
the psychiatrists, said showed a
lack of imagination.

three-day meeting included Chair
man Walter H. Heller of the
Council of Economic Advisers.

Theme Of Optimism .

Unlike some previous council
meetings, all signs indicated a
theme of economic optimism and
confidence. ' - -
The council membership- In
cludes the presidents of the big
gest and most powerful corpora
tions in the United States. About
100 businessmen were here lor
the work-and-play session. ,
The council's loyalty in the Dast
has been with the Republican
Party which hasn't prevented
President Kennedy from energet
ically trying to win its confidence.
Economy Perking Up
The meeting this year is beinc
held at a time when the economy
is showing signs of a spring burst
of cqergy which everyone hopes
will end nearly a year of sluggish
business growth.
The record so far is much
better than either business econ
omists and administration experts
predicted when the group met
here last autumn. "
The gross national product
(GNP for the first three months
of 1963 was estimated at an an
nual rate of $572 billion up about
$8.5 billion from the previous
quarter.
The GN'P is the total value of
goods and services and is the
traditional yardstick for measur
ing economic growth.

Federation of Settlements said
"If the legislature doesn t act to
day, we've had it."
"The pressure really hasn't'
come yet," said Clarence Boebcl.
"We're looking for the real pres
