House Repays
Patient Funds
SALEM (UPI) - A bill to re
pay $16,393 that was embezzled
from patient funds at the State
Hospital passed the House today
and went to the Senate.
The embezzler since has been
convicted and served a sentence.
Part of the money was recovered
from bonds.
Rep. Beulah Hand, D-Milwauk-
ie, said if the state did not repay
the rest, the Board of Control
would have to proceed againt
bonding company, which in turn
Would have to try to collect the
money from the hospital superin
tendent, even though he had noth
ing to do with the embezzlement,
. Rep. John Mosser, R-Beaverton,
said steps have been taken to re
vise fund and bonding procedures
to prevent a similar occurrence,

Dear Ann Landers: I'm an ac
tive mother 28 years of age. My
two children are 2 and 8.
My husband travels five days
out of the week and I was going
nuts being alone so much. Then f
discovered bowling.
Sitters are expensive so I have
arranged to leave the key lo my
apartment with the woman next
door. In case of an emergency
she can always get in.
My husband told me he tried
to phone me from Orlando last
week and when nobody answered
the phone he became frantic. My
8-year-old is a sound sleeper and
he didn't hear the phone ring.
When I told my husband where
I was he got mad and said I
can't leave the kids at night any
more.

the neighbor lady is willing to
help out. She insists it's no trou

Pope's Busy Life Contradicts Failing Health Report
VATICAN CITY (UPII- Pope
John XXIII today made plans for
a busy schedule of public appear
ances and meetings which ap
peared to contradict reports that
his health miht be failing.
One of the Pope's most impor
tant matters of business in the
coming days is a conference with
Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, Ro
man Catholic primate of Poland,
on the possibility of closer rela
tions between the Vatican and
Soviet bloc countries.
The unofficial and unconfirmed
reports aboui the 81-year-old
Pope's health stemmed from
story in the Rome newspaper II
Temix) and the cancellation
Wednesday of a trip the pontiff
had been expected to make.
II Tempo claimed that Pope
John had suffered a relapse of
the gastric trouble and anemia
which confined him to bed last
November. The newspaper said
the relapse occurred Tuesday.
All availab'e Vatican sources
denied the II Tempo report. A
UPI reporter who attended a gen
cral a u d i e n c e in the Vatican
Wednesday sa;d the Pope spoke
in his normal firm voice and
there was no indication he had
suffered a relapse.
Later in the afternoon the Vati
can announced that Pope John I would visit the sanctuary of Pom,
would not make an expected visit
to the Abbey of Montecassino, 100
miles south of Rome, May 23.
There also had been reports he
peii before returning to the Vati
can. Various Vatican sources gave
different versions of why the trip health history, had discouraged

formers electronically danced
9,000 miles into space Wednesday
night and were successfully re
layed to Europe by way of Tel-
star II.
The French tracking station,
which 24 hours earlier had report
ed the first picture transmissions
by the newest U.S. communica
tions satellite "weak and shaky,
said Wednesday night's reception
was "excellent."
Black and white video tape
transmissions also were described
as "extremely good" by the
French station located at Pleu-
muer Bodou. The British tracking
station at Goonhilly Downs, which
did not tune in the color trans
mission, repoited the black and
white pictures were "very good."
Telstar II was fired into orbit
Tuesday morning by the National
Aeronautics and Space Adminis
tration in cooperation with the
American Telephone & Telegraph
Co., which built Telstar I and II.
Tuesday night's transmissions
had been reported weak and
shaky because the satellite's orbit,
which reached 6.500 miles at
apogee, was not presently the best
for television relay.
A boost of power at the ground
station at Andover, Maine, how
ever, resulted In a satisfactory
signal Wednesday night.
Alton E. Dickieson, executive di
rector of the transmission division
of Bell Telephone Laboratories
pronounced the orbit "practically
perfect."
