Once in a while when you have
a choice of plays you have a def
inite right way and wrong way.
Other times you have a good play
and a poor play. It is rare Indeed
that all you have is a guess.
South ruffs the third diamond
In dummy and leads the king of
spades. Then he plays a second
epade. East follows and South Is
at the crossroads. Should he
finesse the Jack or should he try
to drop the queen?
As a matter of strict mathe
matics the dron offers the belter
chance of success, but there Is
more to this hand than strict
mathematics.
South should finesse because if
he finesses he will make the
hand whether or not the finesse
works.
Actually it does work where
upon South pulls the last trump
and eventually tries the heart
finesse to seo if he can make
an overtrick. That finesse will
lose, but his contract will be safe.
Suppose the finesse fails to
work. West wilt win a trick with
the queen of trumps, but he will
have to give the trick back on
his next lead.
If he leads his fourth diamond
South will trump in dummy and
discard his Jack of hearts. If a
heart is led South will make his
Jack. If West leads a club South
will win with the lack: cash the
ace of clubs; enter dummy with
its last spado and discard the
Jack of hearts on the king ol ciuns.

FRESNO, Calif. (UPI) - When
Pat Davis glides on the dance
floor, walks along the golf links
or dips into a swimming pool,
she is fulfilling a promise she
made five years ago in Oregon.
Pat, an attractive blonde, vowed
to resume these aclivities after
suffering severe frostbite injuries
while waiting three days for res
cue on a snow-covered mountain
following a plane crash. She lost
the left leg below the knee and
has only a grafted 3'j inch sec
tion of her right foot.
A small aircraft, piloted by her
husband, band leader Bruce Dav
is, crashed during a snow storm
in four feet of snow at the 6,200
foot elevation on Mt. Aldrich in
Central Oregon. The couple was
en route from Fresno to Spokane.
Husband Sought Help
Pat suffered a fractured pelvis,
severe bruises and abrasions. Her
husband was forced to leave her
to seek help.
Davis made a lean-to and bun
dled her in spare clothing. He
struggled 25 miles through the
deep snow drifts to the nearest
community although he suffered
two broken ribs in the crash.
"I don't remember much," Pat
says of her rescue wait, "f
laughed, I sang, I talked to my
self, 1 cried and I prayed a little."
An Air Force helicopter re
moved her to a John Day, Ore.,
hospital where she spent three
months.
Altogether, Pat has had 14 op
erations on her legs since the
crash. Her hands also were froz
en while on the mountain and the
feeling only came back complete
ly 18 months ago.
Bat the spunky 40-year - old
mother of two teen-age children
has refused to become discour
aged despite the almost constant
pain.
Likes Smiles Better
"There is no middle road with
me I can be happy or get
depressed and I like it better
smiling through," she says.
Naturally, her injuries have re
quired a change in the style of
her activities.
"When I swim I have to scoot
out into the water ' and scoot
back," she explains. "All the
movement has to be done with the
arms."
In dancing, Pat, who limps
slightly, has to move with the
pressure on the heel of her right
foot. However, she has danced the
twist with her husband at a motel
where his band performs.
Although the a e r i a 1 accident
was frightening, Pat hasn't
grounded herself. The Davises
have purchased two aircraft since
the crash and Pat often takes the

WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
House, cliafing under complaints
that some of its members have
cheated, today passed legislation
to tighten restrictions and report
ing requirements on congressional
travel outlays.
The bill's sponsors pointed out
that the measure was drafted be
fore the most recent round of pub
lished criticism which has cen
tered on a handful of members.
They said It grew out of "trial
and error over a period of years.
The legislation now goes to the
Senate.
No member's alleged abuse was
mentioned during House debate on
the bill. But Rep. Omar Burleson,
D-Tcx., chairman of the House
Administration Committee, said
his group had heard "rumors"
that a few members had taken
advantage, of t h e loose control
system now in effect.
Burleson said the bill's object
was to make sure every cent
spent on overseas travel, whether
in U.S. or foreign currency, is
properly accounted for, and that
Ihe record is opened for public in
spection.
That way, he said in response
to a question, the spotlight of pub
lic opinion will be focused on the
few, If any, who abuse their posi
tions, without reflection on the
rest of Coongress.
In bucking the bill to Ihe Sen
ate, members expressed open
doubla as to whether the "olhcr
body," as It is called in the House.
would add its endorsement. Some
demanded assurance that what
ever compromises may bo made
with the Senate, members of
both houses will in the end be
treated alike.
