Modoc Junior High School Plan Eyed

a report of the findings on or
ganization and operation of a jun
ior high school 'in the Modoc Un-
ion High School district. The com-'
mittee was appointed by the aug
mented committee last month to
find the feasibility of a junior
high school for this district.
The report showed the junior
high school would add an estimat
ed 30 students from other elemen
tary districts to the Alturas dis
trict. It would bring a total en
rollment in the seventh, eighth
and ninth grades to Jti2 in 1963-64;
271 in 1964-65, and 243 in 1965-86.
These figures are based on the
grammar school enrollment each
year.
The report slated that the Al
turas school district could prob
bably absorb the seventh and
eighth grade students from the
joutlying districts. The major prob
lem arising would be the need of
one more classroom.
To accommodate all three
grades, 13 classrooms' would be
required, and it was assumed the
buildings and area at the present
Eighth Street school would be util
ized, litis would mean the con
struction of additional buildings in
the Eighth Street school area, such
as rooms for shop, music, home
making, science, and art. The re
port stated that the existing ca(e-
term at the Fourth Street School
could be used if mobile units were

used to transport the food to the
junior high school dining room.
There would have to be a close
coordination between the high
school courses and the junior high
courses. It was pointed out that
departmentalization of the instruc
tion could provide more special
ized instruction in many subjects
Subjects such as shop, homcmak-
ing, vocational agriculture, foreign
languages, music, and art could
be offered. These would be in ad
dition to the subjects already re
quired by Jaw.
The cost of operation of the
junior high school would come
from the state ADA of each dis
trict per student and the deficit
absorbed by the district of the
resident, per ADA. The state
would apportion $200 per student
and each district, $170 per stu
dent.
At the conclusion of the report,
Jack Teuteur, chairman of t h e
committee, polled district repre
sentatives for their feelings. In
favor of the school were State
Line, Willow Ranch, and Arling
ton. Davis Creek was not repre
sented. Likely answered no and
Alturas made no comment.
House Hikes
Jobless Aid
SALEM (UP1) Higher un
employment benefits were ap
proved 44-16 by the House Tuesday
although an opponent called the
bill a "Robin Hood deal in re
verse."
The bill raises minimum bene
fits from $15 to $20 and maximum
benefits from $40 to $44. It also
revises slightly the method of
computing benefits and eligibility.
The measure went to the Sen
ate.
Rep. Fred Meek, R-Portland
gave it the "Robin Hood in re
verse" tag. He said It would take
from the people already getting
the least, and give more to those
getting more now.
Rep. Robert Packwood, R-Port-
land, failed on a 30-30 vote to get
the measure sent back to com
mittee. Packwood said it fails to
do anything about the problem of
seasonal workers.
Rep. Sidney Bazctt, R-Granls
Pass, said the bill also fails to
reform the experience rating tea
lure.
The increased benefits will cost
about $600,000 a year. Rep. W.O.
Kelsay, D-Roseburg, said it was
the first raise in benefits in six
years.

a ride with a friend, not knowing
the car was stolen. His name was
spread all over the papers. Sev
eral months have passed and
even though our son has been
cleared of all biame his name is
still on everyone's lips.
All we can do now is conduct
ourselves with dignity, try to hold
our heads up and wait until the
busybodies fird something else to

went crazy over mixed-league
bowling rang a familiar bell. In
our family it wasn't bowling, it

My wife was always a hotshot
at cards. First it was a friendly
little game witn the girls. Then

field to include both boys and

She got to be such a whiz that
the local talent was no challenge.
She had to go out of town for

three days.

So after three years of eating out
of the freezer I blew the whistle
on her.
Today I am married to a wom

from another and we have two
children. My first wife was too
busy to think about kids. And 1
might add, we are very happy.
