Negroes Urged To Speed

racial demonstrations In a contin

Negro youths were called to
three mass meetings (starting at

demonstrations. New marches
were expected by 2 p.m. EDT.
More than 200 Negroes, includ
ing many children, were arrested
Friday, bringing to approximate

call off their show of pressure un
til new and more moderate city
government which he will head

Four KUHS Students Win Art Awards
Four Klamath Union High
School students were among the
national winners In the annual
Scholastic Art Awards for high
school students announced Satur
day by Scholastic Magazines,
which has conducted the program
for 36 years.
Medal winners were 16-year-old
Jim Becne for his oil. "Circus
Parade," and 18-year-old Roseann
Dcarlng for her lithograph of Cra
ter Lake.
Honorable mentions went to Ron
Bentley, 14, for his collage.
'Scramble. The award sponsors
offered to purchase the work for
$25 to hang in the new building
they're constructing in New York
City.
Kathy Chilcote, 16, also received
an honorable mention for her
print.
The awards, totaling 455, are
the climax of a vast art project
which started with regional exhi
bitions and eliminations in 33
areas across the nation. Total on
.tries were estimated at 170,000.
Juries of 27 artists and art edu
cators In New York awarded 402
gold medals for outstanding work
in the 19 varied art classifications,
as well as 38 Hallmark Honor
Prizes of $100 each for the best
painting from each region, and 15
Strathmore Awards of $50 each
for the best in each of the two-
dimensional categories.
Tile 455 pieces winning gold
medals and cash awards will be
displayed at Scholastic Magazines'
National High School Art Exhibi

Union Savings Bank, New York,
