WASHINGTON (NEA) - The
weird bathyscaph Trieste was
designed to discover how to make
a new series of deep-diving, nu
clear submarine hulls that could
survive such accidents as sent the
Thresher to the bottom.
Now the Trieste will be used to
searc h out a mile and a half be
neath the sea what caused the nu
clear attack sub to ro down.
The ungainly bathyscaph. mci
deniallv. mav turn out to be the
most important item in the Navy's
attempt to cnecKmaie me soviet
undersea missile fleet.
The Trieste has scarcely any
undersea mobility, but it can go
down seven miles with impunity.

the discoveries learned in workingl

submarines which can operate
indefinitely and safely at depths

feet."
But even more importantly, the
Trieste is the first of a series of
deep-sea bathyscaphs which hope
fully will discover enough of the
nature of the ocean bottom and
its geography so advanced U.S.
suhs would be able to live, hide1
and hunt skillfully on the ocean
bottom. They would have t h e
"geographical" and environmen
tal know-how to search out. "see"
and kill enemy submarines. Yet
Ihev would be able to lurk so
Ideep in ocean valleys that it will
be extrcmelv difficult for enemy
suhs to find and kill them.
But you would never guess this
potential from looking at the awk
ward Trieste.
The main "hill?" is 57 feet
long. 11 feet in diameter, made
ot steel inch thick. It is di
vided into 13 chambers, each sep
arated into 13 chambers, each

In 11 of the compartments the
Trieste carries approximately 30,-

At seven miles under the sea
the pressure on the hull is over
eight tons a square inch. As the
gasoline contracts, sea water
flows in to create an even pres
sure.
The other two compartments are
normally emptv when the Tri
este rides on the surface. They
are filled with sea water to take
her down.
In the hull also are 10 to 13
tons of small iron pellets the size
of BB shuts. These are released
lowly to control the speed of the
dive or in greater numbers to
ause the Trieste to ascend.
Hanging below the hull is a
spherical steel gondola about
six feet in internal diameter,
with walls 4;l4 to 7 inches thick.
There are three officers quali
fied to operate the Trieste. Two of
these now form the Trieste
crew" Lt. Cmdr. Donald
Keach, the commanding officer,
and Lt. George Martin.
How will the Trieste operate in
going down to look over the
sunken Thresher?
Lt. Martin will probably he as
signed above to operate at the
surface.
Cmdr. Keach will probably
take down with him a specialist
on submarine construction who
has some knowledge of metal
fatigue.
Capt. Harry Mason, command
ing officer of the Navy electron
ics laboratory at San Diego and
normally responsible for the re
search operation of the Trieste,
says that getting the bathyscaph
down a mite and a half and
looking around is no problem.
"She's been going down once
a week for the past year."
The problem, Capt. Mason
says, is locating precisely where
the sunken sub is with sonar.
"Then you carefully ligure out
ocean currents so vou'll know how
far the Trieste will drift as it goes
down." The Trieste, he says, "is
somewhat like a balloon." If fig
ured correctly, the current will
carry the Trieste to the exact sxt
where the Thresher lies.
Capt. Mason calculates it
should take somewhat less than
an hour to reach bottom, though
it may Uikc a number of tries to
hit the Thresher area. Then the
crow will have four hours of
working time while the Trieste ho
vers. Battery power enables the
Triesle to do some moving.
Before the operation starts, the
two passengers will crowd into the
;mall steel gondola. They'll be
well clothed because it's cold un
der the sea and the gondola has
no heating system. Tliey'll enter. to the gondola below. After thel
