Don Clown
Costumes
SUNNYVALE. Calif. - lUPD
The scene is the huge Lockheed
Missiles and Space Company
plant.
A research scientist in micro
systems electronics telephones a
hydraulics specialist in space sys
tems and says:
"Hello, Jingles, this is Rawco.
Don't forget tonight. Remind
I'apo, Happy and Bilbo. We've
got to do more work on the uni
ty cle."
You might think this is some
ahtruse space jargon. Not at all.
It's a typical conversation
among fc a half dozen Lockheed
employes whose hobby is smear-!
ing themselves with grease paint J
donning wigs and sporting out
landish costumes. They're mem
bers of the Clowns Club and they
t;ake part in Lockheed's employe
recreation program.
With them, clowning is a seri
ous a f f a i r even to the extent
that they always call each other
by their clown names. Rawco
said the clowns do not want per
sonal publicity, but there is still
another reason.
Clowns Are Busy
The Lockheed clowns have
plenty to do, performing at hos
pitals and similar institutions,
and at company affairs, They
are so much in demand for these
appearances that they do not
want to be badgered as they
sometimes are by requests to!
appear at children's birthday I
parties.
The club is open to wives and
children. Papo's lS-year-old son
has made a number of appear
ances with the Lockheed troupe.
At their meetings, the clowns
work on the routines and the
gadgets they use in their act.
Right now, they are learning how
to tie balloons into animal
shapes.
"And we've been practicing on
the unicycle." Rawco said. "Jin-!
gles and Papo Jr. are the best
prospects for this, I've tried it
but I'm too old.
"We're careful not to scare
anyone, and we never lay hands
on anyone. To kids, a clown is
something special. He's not a
person."
Rawco recalls when a young
ster caught him removing his
m.tkeup.
"Il' A Man
"He turned to his mother and
said in shocked tones, 'Why, he's
a man. Mnmmy.' "
But Rawco said kids can try
his patience at times.
"You really have to he on your
guard. They step on your feel
and put firecrackers in your
pockets. One little monster once!
sneaked up behind me and belt
ed me as hard as he could in
the hack with a baseball bat.'
Still, clowning is less hazard
ous than aerial acrobatics, which
Rawco once tried when he trav
eled with a circus one summer
as a youngster. He was tossed
hack and forth brtween two
catcners and was doing hne - un -
hi the day they sard they wcrei
going to practice without the net.
"I lost interest right then.'
he said. "That's when the men
are separaiea irom me noys. -

O'Brien, the flashy attorney on the
'Sam Benedict" series, is consid
erably less than a flash around
the house in the evening after a
hard day on the set.
Unlike Western series and de
tective shows where action replac
es much of the dialogue. O'Bricn'sl
program demands long speeches,
which he must commit to mem
ory. So when the big lnshmani
returns to his Brentwood home he;
buries himself in a script. i
Televiewers might not recognize
the star under such circumstanc
es. He wears thick, dark rimmed
glasses while studying his home-i
work. They are a reminder of a
cruel rumor that O'Brien was los
ing his sight. I
He's not touchy alout the sub
ject and discusses it openly. j
"I suffered hemorrhages in both
eyes during World War II." he
explained. "I was injured in a
plane crash. And after the war
suffered a couple of blows to
the eves in action movies and the
hemorrahges recurred. Rut both
eyes arc fine now.
"When we're filming the show
I wear contact lenses, hut the

O'Brien's home life might be
the American dream come true.
He's married to a beautiful for
mer actress, Olga San Juan, and
they are the parents of two pretty
daughters. Bridget, 13, and Maria.

a son last year, Brendon, now 10
months old.

The family was terrified more
than a year ago during the disas

homes in the neighborhood burned
to the ground. The trees and
shrubbery were singed and ashes
coated tlie pool, but the house was
unscathed.
Few viewers recall that O'Brien
won an Oscar for best supporting
actor hack in 1354 for his per
formance as a jittery press agent
in "The Barefoot Contcssa." As a
movie star he was chary of star
ring in a television series.
"I have mixed feelings about the
series," he said thoughtfully.
"You certainly reach a great
many more people in America
every week, but you run the dan
