Annual Barbershop Quarter and Chorus Concert at Mills Auditorium Saturday eve
ning, May 4. This popular foursome has made numerous appearances in cities of the
Pacific Northwest, but this will be their first appearance in Klamath Falfs. In addi
tion to their singing, the te.-;or will do a comedy skit. The billing for the show in
cludes six other quartets and two choruses, men and women. Profit from the perform
ance will qo to the Intercommunity Hospital Fund. Tickets may now be purchased

JFK Tells Cuban Policy Critics To Stop Sidestepping

ger violence and bring "world
wide difficulty."
The President challenged critics
of his Cuban policy Wednesday to
be more precise in their proposals
and to stop sidestepping tbe is
sue of whether the United States
should go to war over Cuba.
Kennedy discussed the Cuban
situation at a wide-ranging news
conference, his first in three
weeks. He also dealt with Laos,
a nuclear test ban and birth con
trol among other subjects.
Asked if he would like to answer
criticism by former Vice Presi
dent Richard M. Nixon and other
Republicans of his stand on Cuba.
Kennedy listed steps he said had
been taken against the Castro
regime.
He said free world trade with
Cuba had been cut from $800 mil
lion to $80 million in the past!
three years, Castro had been "al
most diplomatically isolated" in
this hemisphere and steps were
being taken to cut off guerrilla
activity from Cuba.
Laos He was sending Under
icretary of State W. Averell Har-
riman to Moscow Thursday to dis
cuss Hie Laos crisis. Harriman
carried a "short message" from
the President to .Soviet Premier
Nikila Khrushchev.
Test ban He and British Prime
Minister Harold Macmillan have
suggested new proposals to
Khrushchev in an effort to break
the deadlock over a nuclear test
ban treaty. But Kennedy was not
loverly optimistic about prospectsi
for an accord.
Summit There are no plans for
him to meet w ith Khrushchev and
it did not seem that such a con
ference "would be useful unless
we were in agreement upon a test
ban, which we are not know."
Birlh control He favors in
creased government support of
basic research on human reproduc
tion. But he declined to take a

tor's proposal that the federal
government underwrite a massive
research program aimed at de
veloping new methods of bu-th
control acceptable to all religious
groups.

kit of intestinal fortitude to give
up an immediate sure trick, but
if East wants In bent three

Assuming tit it East plays the
nine of spades. South will win
tlie trick, go to dummy with a
heart and Wad (lie jack of chilis.
East will duck and South will
finesse. The king play will do
him no good. West will be on
lead with tlie queen of clubs and
will play his second spade.
This will knock out dummy's

Four men were arrested Tues
day by city police after break
ing up a restroom at a service
station at the corner of S o u t h
Sixth Street and East Main
streets and gelling into a fight
with three patrolmen trying to
make tie arrest.
Charged wilh drunk and disor-
ordcrly conduct were, It u s s e 1 1
Wayne Long, Route 2, Box 562;
Everett , Wayne Dixon, Route 2,
Box 550A, and Phillip W. O'Neill.
Box 3887, Kingslcy Field. Mike
W. Murray, Box 3024, Kingsley
Field, was charged with disor
derly conduct.
When one of tlie palrolmen ar
rived at the scene the service
station attendant told him eight
or nine men had just left after
causing a disturbance in the rest
room. The attendant said shortly be
fore the disturbance one of the
men approached him and said if
he heard noise In tlio rest room
"just disregard It."
Tlie patrolman called the police
station for assistance when he
spotted five of the men walking
down South Sixth near Itadcliffc.
While questioning the men tlie
patrolman observed two of them
had blood on their jackets. When
Dixon became abusive during
questioning tlie patrolman at
tempted to arrest him for being
drunk, hut Long gralihcd the
imliceman and they started grap
pling.
The fight subsided lemiiorarily
when two more patrolman arrived
at the scene. One of the patrol
men took Larry Egland, who's
former address was 142 Nimitz
Street, back to the service sta
tion to get washed up. He had
been badly beaten about the
head and face.

While Egland was being taken'
care of the fight broke out again
on the street between the four
men and the two remaining pa
trolmen. I
When the third patrolman got
back to the scene of the fight
he called the station for more help
and several more policemen
came to break up the fight and
take the four men to tlie station
to be charged.
Murray, however, was able
to slip away in the confusion, but
was apprehended Wednesday
afternoon.
