Balks Touch Off Riot
In Cincy-Dodger Game

A widely-used four-letter word
touched off the biggest rhubarb
of the baseball season so far.
The word was "balk" and it
not only caused Cincinnati pitch
er Jirn Owens to blow his top
but also produced probably the
most violent demonstration ever
at Dodger Stadium in Los An
geles. Owens hit the ceiling when
three balks were called on him
during the second inning of
Wednesday night's game in which
the Dodgers blanked the Reds
7-0.
The Cincinnati right-hander
was so incensed and argued so
violently that he was ejected
from the game, but that was
merely a prelude of what was to
come.
As the umpiring team headed
by Augie Donatelli summoned an
other pitcher from the bullpen,
the angry Reds threw helmets
and towels on the field until Don
atelli emptied the Cincinnati
bench. He told manager Fred
Hutchinson he could bring in Cin
cy players from the clubhouse as
needed.
Reliever John Tsitouris, taking
liis good sweet time, warmed up
10 minutes. All told, the game
was delayed nearly 20 minutes
while the 19.089 fans howled J
partly in sympathy with the
Reds, partly against them and
mostly against the umpires, who
called a total of five balks in the
game.
Breaks National Record
Owens' three balks in one in
ning broke the National League
record and all but overshadowed
a fine three-hit performance by
Dodger southpaw Johnny Podres,
who had one balk called against
him also.
With all the furore over the
balks, three Dodger homers off
Tsitouris were somewhat anti
climactic. John Roseboro con
nected in the fourth. Ron Fairly
belted a two-run homer in the
fifth and Frank Howard also hit
one in the same frame.
In less violent NL games .the
Milwaukee Braves beat the Hous
ton Colts, 4-3, the Pittsburgh Pi
rates defeated the Philadelphia
Phillies 6-4, the St. Louis Cardi
nals took over first place with a
4-3 win over the San Francisco
Giants, and the New York Mets
blanked the Chicago Cubs 2-0.

Carlton Willey pitched the Mets
to their first shutout of the sea
son with a three-hitter over the
Cubs. Rookie second baseman
Ron Hunt hit his first major
league homer off loser Bob Buhl.

The Oregon Tech Owls, still
smarting from a double loss in
curred Tuesday at the hands of
powerful Southern Oregon, were
flat and,tired Wednesday in drop
ping a 9-2 decision to a good Col
lege of Siskivous team of Weed,
Calif.
The Owls had no pitching left
and the ones who did throw had
pitched the day before. Coach
Jim Partlow finished up the game
by using five players on the
mound, only two of which are
listed as pitchers.
But it wasn't the pitching that,
hurt the Ow ls so much as it was
the lack of hitting on their own
part. The Mile High team could
manage only four hits off a pair
of Eagle hurlers and .two of
those came off the bat of first
baseman Ed Appleman.
Fielding-wise, it was an excel
lent game. The Owls had one of
their finest games of the season
in the field in making no errors.
The Eagles committed only one
miscue and there were a few good
fielding plays.
The Eagles opened right up off
starter Marv Edwards. He struck
out the first man but catcher Rog
er Pauletto poled Edwards' sec
ond pitch over the leftfield fence
for a solo home run and the first
tally. The Owls were able to get
only one baserunner in the first
two innings off the offerings of
Jiggs Sage, the winning hurler.
The Eagles scored two more
runs in the second to add to
their total. Ken Moore got the
first of his four singles to lead
off the frame ai:0 went to L-iird
on Bob Laustalot's single. Laus
talot stole second and Gary Al
len scored them bo'i with a
single.
Siskiyous chalked up another
run in the t;iird when Mooie
walked, moved to third on two
infield plays and scored when re
lief pitcher Louis Hunter balked.
The Owls rallied slightly in their
half of the third with a tally when
Appleman led off with a double
down tlie rightfield line. He scored
on Edwards' single. The fourth
inning found the Owls' three bat
ters standing and watching third
strikes whip past them.
COS got another pair of runs
in the fifth frame. Laustalot
reached first on a fielder's choice
w ith one out and Ed Fischer, Ea
gle third sacker. slammed a Hun-
ter pitch far over the leftticld
barrier for a two-run poke.
Two more runs were added in
the sixth on a walk, stolen base,
a triple by Doug DeBortoli to
score one run and he scored on a
single by Moore.
The Owls retaliated with a run
in their half. Don Gresdel walked,
took second on a passed ball, third
on an error and scored on a
passed ball. That was all the
Owls' scoring. The Eagles tallied
one more run in the eighth when
Elvy Mazzoni tripled and raced
home on a passed ball.
