weight contenders just back from
Europe, will meet in a nationally
televised 10-rounder at the Toledo
(Ohio) Sports Arena Saturday
night.
Unbeaten McClure of Toledo
and the U.S. Army has been
stationed in Europe since last
October. He outpointed West In
dian Gomco Brennan at Madison
Square Garden in October just be
fore his departure for Germany.
The 23-year-old McClure, the
19f0 Olympic light middleweight
champion, is favored at li-5 be
cause of his 13 straight profes
sional victories since he turned
professional In 1961. Six of his
wins were on knockouts.
McClure is ranked ninth among
middlewcights (160-pounders) by
the World Boxing Association.

them all year, the never quit New
York Yankees always manage to:
come up with the man they want.
And therein lies the behind-the-
scenes story of how they acquired;
Harry Bright from the Cincinnati
Reds Sunday lor approximately
$25,000.
Bright, a 33-year-old utililyman
who has spent 13 of his 17 profes-j
ional baseball seasons in the mi
nors, isn't too well known to the
verage fan. But the Yankees
know him exceptionally well.
Quietly, they watched him belt
17 homers for the Washington
Senators last season and hit a sol
id .273. The fact that he could
play first base, third base and
even catch did not escape their
ittcntion cither.
Decide On Bright
Putting their heads together this
spring, General Manager Hoy
Harney and Manager Ralph Houk
agreed what the team needed
most was a right-handed hitter
with bellcr-than-average power.
They would have liked someone
who could possibly spell inexper
ienced Joe Pepitonc at first base,
too.
"What about Bright?" Hamcy
asked Houk. "He had a good sea
son for Washington last year.
'Do you think we can get him?"
Houk inquired, aware that the
Senators had traded him to Cin
cinnati last winter on the same day
the Yankees had traded Bill Skow-
ron to the Dodgers for Stan Wil
liams. "We can try," Harney said.
So negotiations were begun with
President Bill DeWitt of the Reds
and were culminated Sunday when
the Yankees obtained Handy-Andy
Bright from Cincinnati and dealt
pitcher Jim Coatcs to Washington
for pitcher Steve Hamilton, a re
liever they also became interested
in last season.
Yanks Through Dealing
"Bright gives us the right hand
ed balance we need," Harney
said. "We're through dealing
now.
Bright was stunned when noli
