TV Plans To Dramatize
Government Officials
HOLLYWOOD (1'PH Televi
sion plans for next season and
beyond indicate the emergence of
high government departments in
Washington, D.C., as a source ol
material for heroic images
mass entertainment series.
The adept use of television by
President Kennedy, some of his
family and a number of his ad
ministration aides, has been not
ed previously by this viewer and
others. And of course, broadcast
ing in the past has had other fic
tional government heroes, includ
ing G-men, secret agents and
those ol the FBI.
But the new stirrings seem
unique; and today's look at them
here is the first of a number of
articles that will examine from1
time to time in coming weeks!

that this season is all but ovpi-

Most immediate among the,
plans lor a top government de
partmcnt to have a romantic tele-
.vision here is the autumn's new
Tlobcrt Taylor series on NBC-TV
an hour-long weekly affair basedl
on the field activities of, the U.S.
Department of Health, Education
and Welfare. Taylor portrays a
special assistant to the secretary.
It is now also reported that
CBS-TV. for the season after next,
is involved in another one-hour
series, this one tentatively titled
Amoassarior at Large, and hav
ing a State Department basis and
or background. It would be pro
duced by Franklin Schaffncr, who
among other things happens to be

Gianna Has Tough Time
Inking Record Contract

D'Angelo has found it harder to
pet a recording contract than a
contract with the Metropolitan
Opera.
vMiss D'Angelo is a beautiful
coloratura soprano from Connec
ticut (she Italianized her name
when she went there to study'
who is now one of the Met's
coloratura mainstays. But, so far,
she hasn't been able to nail down
a recording contract, although
flic has free-lanced several rec
ords, such as a "Highlights of
'Lakme' " w hich will be released
here in June.
"Each of the major record com
panics." she says, "already has
a coloratura Roberta Peters',
Joan Sutherland, Rita Streich ,
and they don't need another one
I guess I'll just have to be pa
tient. But I'm used to that I've
been patient all my career.'
She had to leave her native
country to gain recognition. She
had to wait more than 10 years
until she had the chance to come
hack and he a star in her na
tive land. And she was patient
through it all.
To Miss D'Angelo, a record
ing contract would be a tremen
dous boost to opera's big time.
"A record company." she says.
'will publicize a performer and
make her a star. Decca made
Joan Sutherland a star. An in
dividual can't do that alone. It
takes the resources of a big
company.
Miss D'Angelo further feels that
he has a lot to offer a record
company. First and this she's
too mrxiot to say she is per
haps the best looking opera
singer in captivity. But modesty
doon't bother her when she
talks about what she'd like to re
cord. "There is a great deal of mu
sic," she savs. "which has never
a television adviser to the Presi
dent.
In addition, there were reports
not long ago that a top actor had
been queried as to his interest in
a possible series about the U.S.
attorney general's office. And at
least one major effort was afoot
for a weekly hour series about
the Peace Corps.

Javelin Thrower Ends
As Star On

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - The
folks back in Collingswood, N.J.
can take pride in- little Eugene
Orowitz, a curly-haired youngster
who came west to throw a javelin
and ended up a television star.
Actually, young Orowitz has two
other names now. On television
he is known as Little Joe Cart
wright in the "Bonanza" series
Off-screen he goes by the name
of Mike Landon. He changed his
monicker on becoming an actor,
petitioning to become Mike Lane.
But the Screen Actors Guild al
ready had a performer named
Mike Lane, and Eugene finally
chose Landon because there were
no big stars with that particular
handle.
Mike knew little of Alf Landon
for the very good reason that he
was yet to be born when the Kan
sas candidate ran for the White
House. Mike is only 26 years old.
Early Struggle
in many respects his success
story is a classic example of the
starving neophyte actor who fi
nally make good in Hollywood,
A native of Forest Hills, in New
York City's borough of Queens,
Mike was raised in the aforemen
tioned Collingswood, moving to
California to accept a track schol
arship at Santa Barbara College.
Despite an IQ of 151, co-eds and
javelin-throwing took up too much
his time.
Later Mike enrolled at the Uni
versity of Southern California a
track and field powerhouse hop
ing to capitalize on his athletic
prowess. In 1955 (at Collingswood
ighi he was interscholaslic
champion at tossing the javelin.
But he injured his arm and left
school.
To cam a living Mike sold
Ion Colpix: for folk fans, there is
Decca's "Burl" (Ives, of course'
and Dot's "Jimmie Rodgcrs in
Folk Concert."

And like many a young hopeful
Mike mistook a few small parts
as signs of having "arrived." The
result was a series of repossessed
cars, furniture and television sets.
His roles consisted of featured
bits in such as "I Was a Tcen
Age Werewolf," "Maracaibo" and
"God's Little Acre."
Finds Bonanza
But five years ago, when Mike
was just old enough to vote in
his first election, the part of Joe
Cartwright came along and the
two have been inseparable in the
four years "Bonanza" has been
on the air.
Still a terrific physical speci
men, Mike stays in shape 160
pounds on his 5 foot 11 frame. He
can do 125 push-ups and will
challenge any man in hand wres
tling, at which he is expert.
At the moment Mike is a new-
lywed. He recently married Lynn
woe, wno is identified as a non
professional in Hollywood trans
lation, she doesn't work in show
biz.
She is Mike's second wife. His
first was Dodie Landon, whom he
divorced last year. He adopted her
son by a previous marriage, Marki
(now 14), and they adopted two
sons during their marriage; Josh,
and Jason, 2, whom he contin
ues to support.

Hollywood apartment awaiting
completion of a new ranch style
home in the hills overlooking Los
Angeles. , l he only movie star'

built-in television set.
Mike is a loner. He and Lynn
rarely travel in the tinsel town
social whirl. Most evenings they
