Nelson Reed Recounts History Of Rhodes
On Flying Visit To Ancient Greek Island

"Just an hour'! flight from
Crete brought us lo Rhodes, an
island which is some 70 miles!
long and 30 miles wide. It is very
mountainous with a surprising
amount of timber, pine, oak and
Cyprus, for it has ample rainfall
and some small streams. The
first thing that impressed us were
the magnificent colors of the
ocean, which shades from a love
I-dark Crater Lake blue to a pale
3'jOamarine over the shallows.
Evfry so often there is a fine
beach of yellow sand. Off on the
far-horizon to the west stretched
a : jagged skyline of mountains
that is Turkey.
Like all of Greece the story
of Rhodes has its beginning
far back in antiquity with all its
mythology of gods and men. No
place in the world' has been in
volved in more interesting his
tory. The Greeks, the Persians,
the Romans, the Italians, and
the Crusaders all were here, and
the Germans, of course, lately.
AH have left their mark in the
ruined temples, the fine buildings
tbat exist today, and an occasion
al bombed out house high on the:
bill.
.'Most impressive of all is the
Walled fortress of the ancient
city. It was built by the Knights
of St. John of Jerusalem, a Cru
sader organization, as a base of
operations. It was said to be
the best fortified city in the
world, and we could well believe
it as we walked around and
through it Between the very
; thick . stone outer and inner walls
is a moat about 75 feet deep,

chutes through which round stone

er up are the archers towers.
The fortress looks and was im
pregnable. Only by starving out
the defenders in a very long seige
was it ever captured, with the
usual tale of being betrayed by
traitor. It must have taken
years to build for it seemed to
us we walked for several miles
around it.
Inside the walled city is the
Palace of the Grand Masters
which was completely restored
by the Kalians when they occu
pied the island prior to the last
war. The palace has over 100
rooms and today many of them
are partially furnished with me
dieval European furniture, tapes
tries and pictures. The beautiful
floors are made of a great vari
ety of Greek marble surrounding
fascinating mosaics made of col
ored small pebbles.
Around the harbour arc many
fine public buildings of modern
Greek and Byzantine architec
ture. A very fine large Greek Or
thodox Church that we wandered!
through has wonderful murals
of the Bible stories, magnificent
crystal chandeliers and a
beautiful altar with many ikons.
One thing that has impressed
us very much the last few days is
how good looking the Greek men
Motf Airport Ownership
Handed To Two Cities
DUNSMUIR - The Siskiyou
County Board of Supervisors
through F. II. Clirlstensen, air-
port coordinator, has informed
the cities of Mount Shasta and
Dunsmuir that the county is turn
ing financial responsibilities for
Molt Airport over to these two
cities, but legal transfer of title
lo the airport will bo delayed.
In a letter to the city council
Monday night, Christenscn said
the supervisors are not budgeting
any funds for Mott Airport for
the coming fiscal year. The let
ter: started the last bill the
county will pay will be the elec
trical meter reading of June 30,
1!3, and maintenance and ulil
ity costs must then be met by
Ihe two cities.
Mount Shasla and Dunsmuir
agreed last year to accept own
ership of the airport, which
serves the two communities, upon
completion of a $82,275 project
of surfacing and lengthening
the airport runway.
Christcnsen explained in the
letter the deeding of the airport
lo the cities must await a final
audit and clearance by the FAA.
Members of the council
expressed doubt that the city
can assume financial responsibil
ity for an airport owned by the
county. The cities had planned
on partially meeting operation
costs by qualifying for state and
federal aid. These applications
cannot be made until a two-city
ownership is established.
City Clerk Elizabeth Cavin was
authorized lo get a breakdown
of Mott Airport expenditures for
the last three years from the
county auditor's office.
Councilman Claude Slade, chair
man of the airport committee,
said he would arrange to meet
with the Mount Shasta uirporl
committee and then meet with
the board of supervisors to clarify
the matter.

prised at the number of fair

children. It makes you wonder
how widely their ancestors must
have traveled.
Everywhere throughout the sub
urbs and even down in the dry
moat of the citidcl there are chil
dren playing with their lambs and
small goats. They lead them
around on ropes, carry them in
their arms or draped over their
shoulders, petting and fondling
them. These are their only pets
for dogs must have meat which isl
hard to get and expensive and
green feed is everywhere.

Walking along the waterfront
the other day we saw an old
man sitting on the seawall. Be
side him was a pole with a net
on one end and a small spear
on the other. He was dangling
a small dead fish on a wire in
and out of the crevices of the
rocks and under the sea wall
down in the crystal clear wa
ter. Presently he teased a small
crab about twice the size of a
dollar out from under the wall.
Picking up his spear he gigged
it and brought it up. Taking it
off the spear he carefully
wrapped it in a newspaper with
some other small crabs and
put it in his coat pocket. A poor
man's dinner no doubt.
A couple of hundred feet off
shore a fisherman was hanging
over the stern of a rowboat, peer
ing through a large water glass,
searching the bottom for a crab,
lobster or small fish he could
spear. One evening as we ate
supper at a small seaside res
taurant, we watched a rowboat
with four men in it fishing with
a flickering oil flare to attract
the fish while they tried to man
euver a small net under them.
Rhodes is a port of call for
the many cruise ships that ply
the Mediterranean. One day
there were six large liners an
chored in the harbor. Their pas
sengers came ashore in lighters
to be met by buses and tour the
city, swarm through the shops, orl
sit outside the many restaurants
in the sun, drinking beer or ouzo
We are getting accustomed to
ouzo which is a rather sweet li
quor that turns milky when v. a
tered and tastes of anise seed.
However we would not rccom
mend that the "Green Front
Stores" stock it.
The hotels in Rhodes are a
"tower of babble." Every Euro
pean and some Asiatic languages
are being spoken all around you
In fact, one night at dinner my
w ife and I were sure that we were
the only Americans present, judg
ing not only by the language
spoken, but by the left handed
caters and the different features.
No longer can you guess by their
clothes, for more and more the
world dresses alike in the large
cities. Only in the country vil
lages do you still see occasion
al native dress.
