The Association of American
Playing Card Manufacturers con
ducts an annual intercollegiate
bridge tournament . in which the
contestants play a series of pre
pared hands. The players obtain
points for both bidding and play
and Bill Root and Barry Rossler
who prepared this year's hands
insure that everyone gets his
chance to gain points for play
by having the players bid first
as they choose, but then play the
hand at a directed official con
tract;
Playing at six no-trump South
needs four diamond tricks to
make his contract and, since it
is a prepared hand, it is a cinch
that diamonds won't break. His
correct play is to cash all spades
and hearts and the ace and
queen of clubs and watch the
fall of the cards from East and
West.
East will discard clubs on the
third heart and third spade so
West will have started with 10
'cards in the major suits. West
will also have followed to two
clubs so that he won't have more
than one diamond.
Dummy's ace of diamonds will
be cashed and when West fol
lows South will have accounted
for all of his cards and will play
' East for the rest of the dia
monds.

painting done by a 22-month-old
girl.
"Very sensitive and reminiscent
of strange creeping insects." was
the way Judge Frederick Black,

.seum of Art, described the work.
The entry was by Cherasa
Bates, daughter of Al. Bates o(
Los Angeles.
Some of the artists were so

County Fairgrounds from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 6 during the annual Modoc Area Coun
cil Scout Exposition. Each troop set up a display depicting some aspect of scout life.
There were 31 participating units. Sweepstakes winners were Pack 47, with a live
puppet show on safety, and Troop 70, with a first aid demonstration.

son, a veteran woman's doctor,
