da blast at U. S. nuclear policies.
Isakov contradicted U. S. au
thorities and said the disaster
will poison the Atlantic with
radioactivity and endanger
waters as far away as Newfound
land and New York and Boston.
U. S. authorities said the loss
posed no radioactive danger.
Isakov, writing in the govern
ment newspaper Izvestia. said
the lost submarine was proof of
the "aggressive" nature of U. S.
Jiaval forces. He said the reason
the United States built such
'complicated" submarines was
that America lagged in rocketry
pnd space exploration, had lost
its monopoly of the atomic bomb
and was late with the hydrogen
bomb.
Soviet First
The Soviet Union has main
tained it was first to develop the
hydrogen bomb.
i "For this reason the U. S. tried
to make up the balance by build
ing unusual submarines which
could be advertised to the whole
world to frighten those with weak
tierves and to draw into their ag
gressive orbit all those who can-
not afford Thresher rockets.. .and
the notorious Polaris."
" The admiral said the Thresher
tragedy grew out of "the race
for sensational advertising and
for doubtful priority." and that
129 men died because the "Penta
gon wanted to continue risky ex
perimcnts with the Thresher."
Isakov added that America had
frightened" the world with its
enormous army, navy and air
lorce strength.
"We say the Thresher disaster

Horrors Of War, Jap Prison Life Turn Newsman To Priest

Twenty-one years, one month,
and one week ago during an after
noon of horror in the Indian Ocean
off Java, William H. McDougall.
a newspaper man experienced
what he calls "my own private
miracle" and dedicated his life to
God.
On Easter Sunday, 1W2, the
Japanese threw him in prison on
Sumatra for three and a half
years of more horror and near
death which solidified the dedica
tion. Oa this Easter week, Wednes
day night, the Rt. Rev. Msgr.
William H. McDougall, rector of
the Cathedral of the Madeleine,
receives formal investiture as a
domestic prelate of Pope John
XXIII. After 11 years as a priest.
he has been named a monsignor.
The two Eaters 21 years
apart hold special meaning for'
him.
"I began a new kind of life,
in prison, on Easter Sunday. 1942.
and now a new phase of my
priestly life begins Easter week.
1963," he said. "I was in news
paper work from 1932 to 1949. I
loved it. But I found a greater
love."
Bill McDougall, a Salt Lake
City reporter, went to a Tokyo
newspaper in 1939, and became a

at the start of World War II. He
was on the Dutch freighter Poelau

March 7. 1942. he swam desper

Ocean Research Vessel

An ocean research vessel five
times the size of the present
Acona is on the way for the
Oregon State University Depart
ment of Oceanography.
It was announced that an air
craft maintenance and supply
ship that has been in moth
balls in the West Coast Army
Ship Depot at Rio Vista, Calif.,
has been allocated to OSU or
conversion into an ocean research
vessel.
The ship w ill be towed to Port
land in the near future to await
final approval of a request made
to National' Science Foundation
for funds to equip the vessel for
ocean studies, according to Dr.
Wayne V. Burt, head of the
Oceanography Department.
Conversion will cost about $600,
000 with a good share of the
money going into smh things as
winches, cranes, and electronic
navigating gear needed in ocean
studies, Burt said, lit is hoped
the conversion will be accom
plished within a year.
The 20-vcar-old ship cost $1,200.-
000 to build and is still in excel-!
lent condition, Burt noted. Its'
release from surplus was speed
ed by the efforts of Mrs. Edith
Green, Oregon Congressional rep
resentative.
The vessel will be named Ya-
quina when it is ready for com
missioning, Burt announced. It
will be docked at Newport on
Yaquina Bay and with it, OSU
will be able to further expand
its already broad ocean research
program, he added.
OSUs present research vessel,
the Acona, then will go to Uni
versity of Alaska. The Acona was
built in 19G1 with a grant from
the Office of Naval Research
and equipment funds from the
National Science Foundation. To
tal cost was $300,000.
Plane Missing
NELL1S AFB, Nov. (UH -An
F100D Super Sabre Jet was
reported missing Friday night
near Peach Springs, Ariz., when
it failed to return from a four
plane night training mission.
A spokesman at Nellis AFB, ten
miles north of Las Vegas, said a
search for the craft would begin
at dawn.
