Two Prospectors Saved
From Mine Shaft Depths
MINIDOKA, Idaho i UP! lies-
cue workers hauled two amateur
Hold prospectors from Twin Falls,
Idaho, back to the suilace ol a
liOO-foot mine shaft early Tuesday
alter they had been trapped for
about 12 hours.
The prosectors, both of them
off-duty firemen, vowed this was
their first and last experience in
underground mining.
Darrell Hamilton, 2f, and Y loyd
Cambrel, 23, had been trapped at
the 510-foot first level of a deep
mine shaft in remote Idaho ranch
country since about 4 p.m. Mon
day when an equipment bucket
had stuck in tile ,shalt alter its
cable broke.
Early Tuesday, James Snod
grass, 24, Rucrt, Idaho, another
prospector familiar with the mine,
was lowered to the bucket 370
feet below the surface and
hooked a line to it so it could be
pulled out by hand by volunteers
on the surface.
Cambrel, married and a father
of three, said that while he and
Hamilton sometimes went pros
pecting w hile off duty neither had
been down in a similar mine shaft
before.
He said they had gone there
with the mine owner, Harris Cas
person, Twin Falls, to search for
gold. They had stopped at the
first level after being lowered in
ti the shaft. Casperson started to
lower the equipment bucket when
the winch started to slip and the
bucket to fall. At the time. hc
was in communication to the men
lielow via portable telephone and
told tliem what had happened.
When the bucket fell, however,
the cable snapped. So did the
telephone communications line
and the men were isolated below
without food or water and with
only a small miner's lamp.
"We weren't worried," Cam
brel said after the rescue. "But
ue were sure cold. We kind of
had it figured out pretty close
what was going on on top but
we didn't know tlie cable had fol
lowed the bucket down."
