Jim Fitzsimmons got his first job

He was paid $4 a month, plus

He was then It years old.
Now pushing 89, the man who
is known as "Mr. Fitz" to racing
fans the world over, will retire
as the dean of American trainers
in June.

Nashua beat Swaps in their
famed match race and went on
to earn a record $752,550 and
become "horse of the year."

Sunny Jim was announced Tues
day by Ogden Phipps, one of the
three generations of the Phipps
family for whom the octogenar
ian has trained horses. Phipps
said that Bill Winfrey, who
trained the great Native Dancer
for Alfred Vandcrbilt, will sue-'
ceed Mr. Fill.
Asked how he plans to spend
his free lime when he finds him
self without a job for the first
time in 78 years. Mr. Fitz re
marked: "Oh, I'll still be around the
track if they let me in. I fig
ure, though, it's about time 1
kinda laid off a bit and took care
of mvself instead of horses."
