equipment, until Jan. 1, 1965, life
preservers, buoyant vests and
buoyant cushions in which the
buoyant material i kapok or fi

heat-sealed plastic bags. As the
State Boating Laws require life
saving equipmeng in boats to be
Coast Guard approved, the exten
sion automatically applies to the
equipment used in Oregon boats.
Originally, the acceptance of
this equipment was to end July

CHICAGO (UPI) - Five mem
bers of the Illinois Public Aid
Commission (IPACi, their con
troversial birth control program
in danger of being ruled, sued and
legislated out of existence. Sat
urday vowed to go to the U.S. Su
preme Court to save it.
Commission Chairman Arnold
Maremont and four other mem
bers hired a private lawyer Fri
day to carry their case to the
courts.
The embattled program, offer
ing free birth control information
and contraceptives to women on
relief in an effort to cut back the
high number of illegitimate births,
went into effect Monday.

The Illinois Senate passed a
bill which would strip the plan
of its most controversial elements
by banning tlie information and
devices to unwed mothers or mar
ried women not living with their
husbands.
The state auditor a:id state
treasurer were ordered not to
draw any warrants .which would
pay for birth control aid to such
women.
-The IPAC's official counsel,
State Atty. Gen. William G. Clark,
condemned the program and said
he supported a suit for a court
injunction to prevent it from
operating.
The board of directors of the
Chicago Association of Commerce
and Industry called for the aboli
tion of the Aid Commission.
IPAC Secretary Daniel Walker
said the head of a Chicago law
firm, Thomas C. McConnell, was
hired because Clark's opposition
to the birth control program "left
us without a lawyer."
Opponents of the IPAC plan
have claimed it amounts to a
"subsidization of sin." Clark, in
supporting the move for an in
junction against the program, said
it makes the state of Illinois "ac
cessory to sexual promiscuity and
prostitution.
A superior court judge is ex
pected to issue the injunction
this week.
