MAD GAY WHIRL Actress Sophia Loren and her sister,
during a gay whirl at a downtown boutique last Monday in

'Rat1 Shelley Berman Wants
To Quit Sinking Night Club
By VERNON SCOTT
UPI Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD (UPI)-"I am a
rat and I want to leave a sinking
ship" Shelley Berman.
Comedian Berman was speak
ing apocryphally but earnestly.
His sinking ship is the night
club business. His problem is.
where to go?
He went down the list of pos
sibilities and came up with nega
tive answers:
"The movies? They don't make
enough of them any more. Be
sides, w ith great stars o u t of
work what chance does a pre
tender have?
"Broadway? There aren't
enough plays and shows to keep
a fraction of the New York actors
employed. The theater is out.
"Radio? It's no longer an en
tertainment medium.
"Television? It's dangerous.
You go on it with your own show
tor a couple of years and then
where are you? Look what hap
pened to George Gobel and Bob
Newhart.
There is one avenue of escape
for Berman which promises
bright future and it is there that
the funnyman hopes to drop the
gangplank of his floundering ca
recr.
His out? Dramatic guest shots
on television shows.
"It isn't enough to make a lot
of money and win the adula
(ion ot crowds of people." said
Berman at his unfunniest. "A co
median, a wit, a humorist wants
respect, too.
"Take Milton Bcrle, a great
one. They call him Uncle Miltie
But with Laurence Olivier it's
Mr. Olivier."
Bcrman's passion on the sub
ject had obviously carried him
away. It's Sir Laurence, not Mr
Olivier these days. But that's not
the point; almost everyone calls
Berman by his first name, Shel
lev. Just once, he'd like to hear
someone call him Mister Berman
even a waiter.
"My No. 1 problem is surviv
al." he said during a recent stay
at the Beverly Hills hotel.
"Nightclubs are not dead yet,
but tney are disappearing. Look
at Los Angeles. This town has
about six million people it can

Sterling Hayden Back
In Films After 5 Years
LONDON UPI Ruggedly
handsome Sterling Hayden de
scribes himself as "the guy who
made all those bum movies and
ran off with his kids to Tahiti on
that schooner."
Hayden came out of five years'
hibernation recently to work with
Peter Sellers and George C. Scott
in Stanley Kubrick's film. "Dr.
Strangelovc: Or How I Learned
To Stop Worrying And Love The
Bomb," which is a satire on nu
clear warfare.
The 47-year-old actor bundled
his four kids onto his schooner
and walked out on his wife, and
his Hollywood career, five years
ago. He took the children with
him to the South Seas and won
custody of them after a long
court battle.
"I've found the greatest thing
in the world self-respect," said
Hayden. who is making his first
film since then.
As for calling it a comeback.
Hayden said "there was nothing
to come back from." He figures
he has made about 35 lilms and
is luckv if he tan remember the
names of five of them.
"The past few years have
been the best period of my life."
he said. "For the (irst time since

starving. He can always play

Meanwhile he will continue to
seek greener pastures. For Shel

Hayden's publishers think the
actor, who hardly even wrote a
postcard until he was 43, can be
come an important literary tal

of a tortured individual to be
himself in a society which is hos

a tough question and you've got
to keep asking it."
But Hayden has no axe to

"I messed myself up," he said.
