Viland, an engineer at Ameri
can Motors Corp., averaged 28.61

wife from Hemet, Calif. Mrs.
Sawyer averaged 27.9 miles per
gallon in her Corvair Monza to

Coach Mansfield has been ill

lumber barge Mary Olscn stood
high and dry on the mudflats of
Eureka harbor Thursday after a
tugboat captain purposely ground
ed it to save a cargo of lumber.
Captain Cliff Miller of the tug
San Jacinto said several hundred
thousand board feet of timber slid
into the ocean as the barge list
ed heavily in stormy seas Wednes
day.
The barge, carrying three mil
lion board feet of limber from
Coos Bay, to Los Angeles, ap
parently sprung a leak, according
to Miller.
