Foundations
Fashions for spring have soft.
supple lines and so do the
season's foundations. While gird
les, brassieres, corselets tend to
cover more of the figure, they do
so lightly, in the prettiest possible
colors and fabrics.
Brassieres shape gently mold
ing a high and rounded mistime,
close to the bod. Girdles are
marvels of weightlessness and
movement, with new waistband
and. in pantie girdles, new leg
constructions for greater freedom
and ease. Corselets feature soft,
natural cups, dipping backs, lacy
trimmings. . ,
.Necklines Vary
With spring's "little boy" suits
and casual dresses permitting no
bosom emphasis, none is evident
in the newest high fashion bras
sieres. Padding and foam con
tours are played dow n, with shap
ing achieved instead through sub
tle bias cuts and cloud-soft cup
linings.
Ju.t as couturiers are carving
out necklines front and back, so
are bra designers offering varied
necklines in late-day foundations.
Wide-set straps are frequently fea
tured, as are back-plunge bras
sieres both with straps and with
out straps.
Built-up styles are no longer
only matronly styles; they come
in sheer fabrics for youthful fig
ures. Nor are long line bras-

Waistline Move I
Waistlines move upward in
girdles, and leg sections stretch
longer in pantie girdles. Lven
some junior foundations, fit from
just under the bustline all the
way to mid-thigh. They're con
trolling because they're designed
to be; comfortable because
they're made of spandex: essen
tial because outer fashions subtly
define the figure.
Even the loose-and-lifted waist
line demands undercover control.
More revealing then concealing,
its . best foundation is a corselet
that elongates the figure by im
proving its proportions. Pantie
styling continues popular in one-
piece foundations, and can be
found in brief to long-legged ver
sions.
Pastels lead the color lines, as
is generally true in spring foun
dation collections, and often
thev're found in Moral patterns
coordinated with slips and petti-
slips.

room hat to be worn with match

Dresses Follow Easy Lines
Spring's most fashionable dress
es are those that suggest rather

The new soft mood of fashion
is interpreted in dresses, coat
dresses and costumes that flow
fluidly over the figure, curving
close to the body but never
clutching or confining it.
Women will like spring's dress
styles because they are femi
nine, flattering and easy to
wear.
Many dresses are doing what
comes "naturally" for spring.
The' new natural dress skims
lightly over the figure, widening
slightly at the hemline. It of
fers the wearer easy elegance, as
do spring's flared A-line skimmer
styles and shift-shapes that hang
sash-tied.
The tunic-top dress, reflecting
"rajah" inspiration, casts a long,
lean shadow over spring fashion.

Every woman w ill want at least
one spring ensemble in her clos
et now that so many of the
prettiest dresses come with their
own jackets or coats. Spring
prints arc often paired with co
ordinated cover-ups lined with
matching print. Other dresses are
accompanied by a scarf or stole
for the "total look."
The simple shapes of spring's
dresses arc kept uncluttered by
a minimum of soft, lady-like de
tailing. Necklines may or may
not have collars. V-necks, some
times filled in with scarves,
abound as do soft, cowled and
draped neckline effects.
Sleeves are a new area of fash-
ion interest (or spring. Although
there arc plenty of sleeveless i
dresses for women who prefer
them, many of the smartest new
styles feature cropped sleeves,
cuffed shirt sleeves, long skinny
sleeves, leg o mutton sleeves
and puffy sieves.
The wandering waistline is on
the move again. For spring, a
dress waist may be where na
ture intended it to be, lowered, or
lifted for a flattering high-waist-cd
effect.
