The name "Stayman" is a gen
eral term applied to a two-club
response to an opening no-trump
as an artificial bid. The general
principle must be good because
many average players and almost
every tournament player uses
some form of the convention. My
method of using this convention
is with the Jacoby transfer bid.
The use of Stayman in some
form or other greatly increases
the efficiency of your no-trumps.
When you add the JTB you are
operating the best possible way.
With 16 points and 4-3-3-3 dis
tribution South has a normal
no-trump. North has 10 points
and a fairly well balanced hand.
He wants to get to game and
might well jump right to three no
trump, but he feels that if his
partner has four spades the hand
might belong in that suit.
He gets to four spades by
means of Stayman. His two club
response asks partner to show a
four card major suit. When part
ner bids two spades. North jumps
to game in that suit.
Four spades is a cinch. South
loses two hearts and the ace of
trumps, but three no-trump goes
down. West opens his fourth best
heart and the defense collects
four hearts and the ace of
spades.

Ernest Boxmann died Saturday in
a psychiatric clinic, taking with
him the confused week-old talc
of the fatal shooting of Ameri
can opera singer Frances McCann
in a Home luxury hotel.
A week ago Friday a maid at
Rome's fashionable Bernini Bristol
Hotel encountered Boxmann, 54,
staggering like "a dead man walk
ing" in a hotel corridor A bul
let in his head.
In the room next to his, 41-year-
old Miss McCann, a star of musi
cal comedy and the opera and
mother of four children whose
family is in Alladena. Calif., lav
dead on the floor, four bullets in
her head, throat and chest.
Police have not been able to
clarify exactly what happened or
why.
Boxmann hinted at details of
Liz Taylor
Files Suit
LOS ANGELES (UPH - A $1
million suit was on file today by
actress Elizabeth Taylor against
a women's wear store for alleged
ly selling "Liz Taylor" blouses
without her consent.
The suit filed by Miss Taylor's
attorney Gerald Lipsky, charged
that Harficld Stores Inc., which
operates Zody's Discount House,
merchandised the blouses begin
ning March 23. 1962.
"It is necessary (for mci to
carefully and zealously restrict the
use of i my i name and likeness so
they do not lose the allure and
glamour which tliey hold for the
public," Miss Taylor stated as a
reason for filing the suit.
The suit also asked an injunc
tion to stop sale of the blouses
w ithout her consent, plus an audit
of the company's books and rec
ords regarding sale of the blouses
to determine the amount of dam
age she had suffered.

band of ex-stripper Candy Barr
said Saturday he would try to
make future plans with her as
soon as she is freed from a Tex-
ax prison where she has spent
three years on a narcotics con
viction.
But Jack Sahakian, a beautician
turned-actor, said he doubted he
would be able to meet his shape
ly blonde wife when she steps out
of the Women's Prison Farm in
about 10 days. Instead, he said
he would wait "for her to tele
phone me the minute she's released."
"Naturally I would like to meet
her when she comes out of the
prison gates," Sahakian said, "but
there are some complications we
must take care of. I might not
be able to meet her immediate-
ly."
However, Sahakian said he
might fly to Texas after Candy
telephones him.
Gov. John B. Connally of Tex
as granted parole to Miss Barr
Friday. But Sahakian said that
following her release the ex-
dancer still would have to apply
as a parolee for the right to come
to their home in Hollywood.
"There's a lot of red tape in
volved," Sahakian said.
He also noted that he had
ceased being a beautician since
Candy went to prison and had

During one questioning period,
Boxmann told police he had
bought the pistol with which Miss
McCann was shot in Frankfurt,
Germany. It later was found un
der the divan in the hotel corridor.
Then he told them: "I never had
any pistol."
Miss McCann had been on a
concert tour of Europe under the
managership of Boxmann, a Ger
man-born American who also was
an executive in a New York op
tical lirm.
Among Miss McCann's effects
was a letter from Boxman dated
Feb. 28 in which he told of his
love for the tall American singer
but added: "I don't think you
have the same feeling for me."
Later in the same letter he
wrote:
"I am capable of dying for you
happily, with a smile, if neces
sary."
The latter was signed, "Your
little loving elephant."
The couple arrived in Rome a
week ago last Tuesday. Hotel em
ployes told police they heard the
pair quarreling Thursday. But no
one heard the pistol shots in the
specially soundproofed hotel room.
On Friday morning, March 15.
however, a hotel employe met
Boxmann walking in the corridor,
his right eye blackened and blood
on his head.
Then a clerk (or a fashionable
women's shop went to Boxmann's
room to collect for a dress that
Miss McCann had ordered. The
clerk said Boxmann got off the
bed and counted out seven $10
bills from his wallet. At the time,
he had a bullet in his head al
though it was not known then
The hotel called a doctor who
went to Boxmann's room. Another
hotel employe went, to Miss Mc
Cann's room and found her body,
clad in a red negligee.
Police were called and from
there on the case became an in
ternational mystery, with police
on two continents trying to fit to
gether the pieces of the puzzle.
In Alladena. Miss McCann's hus
band, salesman J. Walter Rogers
Jr., 47, said he was sure there
was only a business relationship
between his wife and Boxmann.
In Berlin, where Miss McCann
kept an apartment, a friend said
she was "crazy about" her family
and regarded Boxmann only as a
friend.
Acquaintances of Boxmann in
New York, however, said they
saw him with "many women and
almost never the same one tw ice."
His wife, Johanna, who lives on
New York's Upper West Side, re
fused to talk about him.
The key to the shooting was
Boxmann, the only person w h o
might have been able to tell the
details of what happened and
why.
His death left the mvstery un
solved.
