ULTRA 300 fits into your
decorating plans
Guests might think you'va redecorated
your whole kitchen. But you know that
the Gibson ULTRA 300 is the only differ
ence between a drab, old-fashioned kit
chen and one right out of a decorator's
dream. The U300 snuggles up to neigh,
boring cabinets, looks like it's been built
in. And if you think Gibson can do things
for your kitchen, wait till you see what
it does for your cooking. Just fry burning
food on the front thermatic unit. You sim
ply cannot do it . . . the thermatic unit
takes the temperature ot the pan ana
adjusts itself to prevent over or under
cooking.

Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
I have received a letter from
a woman about her 19-year-old
son who had measles 11 years
ago. One day. while convalescing
Irom this disease, he complained
of blurred vision. This cleared
up alter 30 or 40 minutes and
left him with a severe headache
which caused him to vomit sev
cral times. A truly fiigliteiiini;
experience for both motlifr and
son.
Such attacks have been repeat
ed several times a year at irregu-1
lar intervals. Nowhere in her let
ter does the mother refer to the
headaches as migaine but this
pattern is so typical that I cannot
believe the condition is anything
else.
tnese attacks always start in
childhood. But, because a child
cannot describe them accurately
this type of headache often goes
unidentified for many years. The
paltern may vary, but most at
tacks begin with a small spot of
blurred vision which gradually
grows larger and is associated
with a zigzag shimmering.
Characteristically this shim,
mciing, at the peak of its severi
ty, can be seen whether the eyes
are open or closed.
Of one thing we can be sure:
The measles did nol cause the
migraine. There is still some
doubt about the exact cause, but
it has been shown that a spas
modic constriction of the blood
vessels in the brain is Ihe under
lying mechanism of the attacks.
What causes these spasms mav
be different in different persons.
Migraine appears to run in fam
ilies so there is probably a here
ditary factor in some persons. In
others, allergy may play a part,
as evidenced by the fact that
eliminating certain foods from the
diet appears to prevent the at
tacks. Some observers have described
a migrainous type of personality
characterized by above-average
intelligence, shyness, an inclina
tion to be a perfectionist, and
easy fatigability. But these char-1
actenstics cannot be readily
cnangeo.
The frequency and severity of
the attacks sometimes increases
the late teens and early 20s,
period when must persons arc
under severe strains associated
with maturing, achieving econom
ic independence and adjustment
to marriage.
In women, the attacks often
precede the onset of a menstrual
period and cease during preg
nancy. This, and the fact that in
both men and women the attacks
disappear or diminish greatly alt
er 50, suggests that the body's
hormonal system may play a
part.
ror the mild attacks, aspirin
and rest in a (uiet, darkened
room, with or without an ice bag
on the forehead, usually suffices.
For the severe attack, an injection
of ergotamine into a muscle or a
vein may be required. For the
interval between attacks, keeping
fit by avoiding fatigue and by ob
serving the other rules of hy
giene will help.
Recently a new drug, methyser
gide, has been found to relieve
the headaches and prevent their
recurrence. This drug is not ef
fective against other types of
headache.
