Pity the poor Los Angeles
Dodgers.
They started the spring worry
:o2 about Sandy Knulax' sore left
index finger. Now they're con
cerned about Tommy Davis' play
around third base, which is be
ginning to stick out like a sore
thumb.
Knufax again served notice that
he has fully recovered from the
circulatory trouble that sidelined
turn after mid-sean last year
by piling up 13 strikeouts in sev
en innings against the Chicago
White Sox Mondav at Sarasota,
F!a.
Davis, though, hardly looked
like a Pie Traynor or a Billy
i:ox. The All-Star left fielder,
who is being tested at third base,
fet tip three unearned runs with
n wild throw in the third inning
that led to a 5-4 victory for the
White Sox.
A solo homer in the sixth in
ning by Deacon Jones provided
lhe White Sox with their winning
margin. It was the only earned
run they collected off Koufax.
who now has looked sharp in
three straight spring tuncups.
Back To Outfield?
Dodger Manager Walt Alston
may be forced to switch Davis
back to his normal outfield post
it' his erratic fielding starts to af
fect his hitting. Tommy won the
NL batting title last season with
a .346 average.
Casey Stengel, who should have
such problems, enjoyed one of his
rare days in the Florida sun Mon
day when he watched his New
York Mels blank his old New
York Yankees, 1-0, behind the
combined five-hit pitching of
iRpger Craig and Al Jackson at
a St. -Petersburg.
j The Mets, held scoreless by
I Ralph Terry over the first six in
jiings, pushed across the game's
only run off Hal Reniff in the
seventh on a hit batsman, an in
field out, an error by Tony Ku
bek and a single by Larry Bur
right. Three Consecutive Homers
' Catcher John Orsino, obtained
;from the San Francisco Giants in
an off-season deal, hit three con
secutive home runs off lefty Jim
O'Toole to give the unbeaten Bal
timore Orioles their ninth straight
victory a 4-3 decision over the
Cincinnati Reds at Tampa.
Orsino's first homer came in
the third inning alter a double
by Jerry Adair. He hit No. 2 in
the fifth frame and No. 3 in the
seventh before fouling out off
rookie lefty John Flavin in the
ninth.
In Monday's other exhibitions,
the Detroit Tigers downed lhe St.
Louis Cardinals, 8-5; the Milwau
kee Braves outlasted the Wash
ington Senators. 1-0. in 11 in
nings: the Cleveland Indians wal
loped the Chicago Cubs. 16-6; the
Los Angeles Angels whipped the
Boston Red Sox. 7-1; the Hous
ton Colts oublugged the Giants.
14-5; the Philadelphia Philips
needed 13 innings to defeat the
Minnesota Twins, 6-5, and the
Pittsburgh Pirates battled the
Kansas City Athletics to a 12
inning. 4-4 tie.
Fourth Straight Victory
The Tigers scored their fourth
straight victory on home runs by
Rocky Colavito, Norm Cash and
Gus Triandos after spotting the
Cardinals five runs in the first in
ning. Bob Anderson, who pitched
one-hit ball for three innings,
raised his spring record to 3-0.
Singles by Norm Larker and
Mack Jones and catcher Ken
Retzer's error produced the
Braves' winning run against the
Senators. Eddie Mathews paced a
nine-hit Milwaukee attack with
two doubles.
The Indians mauled four Cub
pitchers for 16 hits, including a
homer by Tito Francona and tri
ples by John Romano, Tony Mar
tinez and Gene Green. Rookie
outfielder Nelson Mathews had
two homers and a single for the
Cubs.
The Angels collected all of their
runs and 10 of their 11 hits off
Boston starter Bill Monbouquette.
Bill Rigney's sluggers now have
scored 37 runs on 41 hits in their1
last three games.
Chico Rojas' first home run
since 1961 earned uie rnunes
their marathon victory over the
Twins. Bob Allison pushed Minne
sota ahead, 5-2, in the fifth in
ning with a three-run homer.

ATLANTA i UPH An attorney
for former Georgia Athletic Direc

article entitled "The Story of a
Football Fix" in its current pub

editorial specifically repudiating
the article which accuses Butts
and Alabama football Coach Paul
i Bear Bryant of conspiring to
rig the 1W2 Georgia-Alabama
game.
Schroder said, however, that he
will file a libel suit, probably for
S10 million, against the Post re
gardless of any subsequent action
in the matter by the magazine.
He said the telegram was a for

Bryant last Sept. 14. Burnett, ac
cording to the article, said he
heard Butts giving Bryant Georg

which Alabama won 35-0.
Burnett said Monday he was
motivated only by "an impulsive
desire that the truth be known'
when he revealed the alleged tele
phone conversation, and he felt
th "truth will be eventually told
in full" after an investigation.
Investigations Under Way
A number of investigations were
under way. Georgia Atty. Gen.
Eugene Cook began a probe Mon
day; the FBI said it has made
"preliminary inquiries"; and a
spokesman said the Senate Rack
ets subcommittee would look into
the matter.
Commissioner Bernie Moore
of the Southeastern Conference
i SEC ) also was conducting an in

said it was awaiting word from
Moore.
"We have been in close com

of the SEC, who had the report
under investigation for some
time," said Walter Byers, execu

the present, we have no further
comment to make."
Alabama Atty. Gen. Richmond
Flowers said the Post article "is
not sufficient to warrant an in

The Olympics have not been
staged in the United States since
1932 when they were held in Los
Angeles one of the four cities
which competed with Detroit
Monday for the honor of being
named the U.S. candidate for
1968. The IOC adopted a rule in
1950 that only one city from a
country may bid for an Olympiad
and it must have the approval
of its National Olympic Committee.
Informed sources say the IOC
is inclined to select a non-United
States city as the site for the
1SK8 Olympics but Gov. Romney
ana Mayor Cavanagh believe De
troit will make the best presen
tation -to the IOC when it meets
in Nairobi, Kenya, next October
"No U.S. city is belter known

said Gov. Romney. "We believe
we will get the IOC bid."
We arc optimistic," said May

Commission Chairman Fred

not accept the examination of
doctors in Chicago, where Listoa

breaking up his training camp
here.
"We have the right to examine
Ihe fighter, and under the con

commission contracted for the
fight with the promoters and the
fighters.
Representatives of champion
Liston, ex-champion Patterson
and Championship Sports, Inc.,
Ihe promoting organization, are
due to meet Wednesday to talk
over the next slop. No place or
time has been set, however.
The fight first had been sched
uled for April 4 al the Miami
Beach Convention Hall, then was
moved to April 10 because of Lis
ton's trouble; with his right knee,
which he sprained posing with a
golf club for a photographer.
The knee apparently buckled
under the 225-pound-plus champi

week.
While the hoopla over the fight
went on, Patterson kept on train
ing at his camp, set up at Tropi
cal Park racetrack in Miami. He
said he had signed up to fight
Liston at Miami Beach and
planned to keep it that way.
"Under the terms of the con
tract, I have the right to name
Ihe fight site. I've said it would
be Miami Beach and 1 am pre

This is as good a fight town as
any," said Ihe ex-champ.
He also pointed out that under
the return contract he could get
up to $1 million of Liston's fu
ture purses if Liston fought any
one else ahead of Patterson.

By OSCAR FKALEY
I'PI Sports Writer
MIAMI (UPD Comes the time
of the year today when every
sports writer worth his salt must
predict the outcome of the pen
nant races, and Fearless Fraley's
chalk selections must be the New
York Yankees and the Los An
geles Dodgers.
Now the ordinary format is to
give a heap of weighty reasons
for such a startling prognostica
tion. Like will the left handed
second baseman for Oshkosh make
the backhanded flip to first and
can all 20 managers be right
when they assort unanimously
that "we'll make a run at 'em."
Reasons I got.
First of all, I have scanned the
ball parks with yawning diligence
and then .-bucked the whole bust
ness for other more informative
pursuits. It can now be revealed
that, after a myopic measurement
of the bikini situation, there arc
more curves this season. The fish
haven't been biting good and this
must mean that the take sign is
on. The way Sandy Koufax hits
a golf ball lie might be the next
Babe Ruth and the manner in
which things have been going at
the track I may go back and, like
the Washington Senators,' try to
get even.
The real experts will tell you
it slacks up as a seven team race
in the American League, with De
troit, Baltimore, Minnesota, Chi
cago, Los Angeles and Cleveland
all chasing the Yankees, and more
or less in that order. Kansas
City, Boston and Washington all
will play out the schedule.
In the National League, the Gi
ants, Reds and Cardinals will
have to run all the way to keep
pace with the Dodgers. Pittsburgh
and Milwaukee, the baseball buffs
inform me, might move up into
that chain of command. TI19 Phil
lies, Colts and Cubs will wage a
stirring battle to avoid ninth
place. Tenth already has been
awarded to the Mets.
At Gulfstream Park they'd call
cm like this:
American League
1. Yankees tone best)
2. Tigers (show signs of im
provement)
3. Orioles (may last this time
out)
4. Twins (have to develop late
foot)
5. White Sox (need to show
improvement)
6. Angels (will be tough on
slow track)
