Thirteen Berliners Tunnel To Freedom
BERLIN 'TP! Thirteen retu
joes who dug a fiO-yard tunnel to
e-cape to Ve:t Berlin said today
the hours they .spent in it were
like "eternity in a coffin."
The East Germans spent to
hours huddled at the Western end
of the tunnel, only eight yards
from border police, afraid to
leave it until friendly police ar
rived. The refiiRees included a blind
woman who uas guided through
by her sister, a 70-year-oid grand
mother who was pulled along un
conscious by a rope lied to her
legs and two boys who were told
to pretend they were playing
groundhog.
The refugees came to West
Berlin Sunday at 2 a.m. in a tun
nel it took five months to build.
They told their story today at the
MarienfeMe refugee camp.
Too III to Work?
All the work was done w ith a
spade by a 42-year-old handy
man, who can not work regular
ly because of ill. health, and a
20-year-old medical student.
