Cross Ruff
Cuts Losers
By OSWALD JACOI1Y
Written for
Newspaper Enterprise Assn.
My analysis of the opening lead
as that West probably had a
lot of diamonds. My review of the
bidding told me that I wished my
partner had settled for a small
slam. My count of losers were
two hearts and three diamonds
in my hand but since a trump
had not been opened I had a way
to eliminate all five of them.
One loser could go on the ace
A clubs and I could trump the
other four of them. Maybe every
.thing was going to be all right
after all.
Next I noted that every trump
in my hand and in dummy was
mgn. once 1 started to rulf in
dummy 1 could ruff back and
forth and no one could overruff
me.
An alternate line of play was
to set up dummy's clubs. That
looked more risky and I chose
the cross ruff.
I could not afford a trump lead
because I needed all dummy's
four trumps for my losers. There
lore, 1 had to get in all my
side suit tricks before going after
ruffs.
My ace of diamonds took the
first trick. My next plays were the
ace and king of hearts. I ruffed
a diamond in dummy and cashed
dummy's ace of clubs. I discard
ed a heart, but a diamond dis
card would have been as good
When no one ruffed my wor
ries were over. I spread mv
hand announcing that I would
rulf back and forth for the
maining tricks.
