French Try
For Color
TV Crown
PARIS (L'PH UhPn w
television begins to appear in
European living rooms some years
hence proud Gallic technicians
are noping the tints will be
French.
Just as some French scientists
are working to create an inde
pendent nuclear force, olhers are
striving to produce a color tele
vision process that will outshine
its already-established American
predecessor.
The effort is especially imoor.
tant to its inventor whose name
should leave little doubt of his
nationality, Henri de France.
The system the French govern.
ment-run television will adopt is
the one most of Europe agrees is
me Desi.
The de France process is being
developed and perfected bv the
French Television Company. Thel
f reach system is said here to be
the only one offering any compe
tilion to the American color sys.
dm.
The European nations must
choose one of the two so that a
universal process is established,
enabling them to exchange color
casts. This will increase the hours
of color viewing and divide the
costs of producing the more ex
pensive color shows.
No decision is expected to be
taken before 1964 w hen the Amer
ican process, approved by the Na
lional Television Standards Com
miltcc, and the French SECAM
'sequence memory) systems have
been thoroughly tested and com
pared.
The assistant director of the
French Television, Gen. Marien
Leschi, said the first national
colorcasts in France will take
place in 1968 or 1969 and he seems
to favor SECAM. He said the rea
sons for the wait are:
There is no special channel
for color yet. (The French Ra
dio and Television RTF has an
nounced that the second national
channel will be operating in 19641.
The French SECAM system
is better than the American one
but has yet to be proven, and the
proving will take some time.
France will wait until the Brit
ish, Dutch. Belgians, Italians.
Poles and Russians have agreed
on one process.
While Henri de France is con
ducting colorcasts in his labora
tories near here the RTF is con
tinually experimenting with both
systems. Similar studies are being
conducted in other European na
(ions. Leschi said: We IR1H arc
persuaded that the French proo
ess has an. immense advantage
because it reproduces colors bet-
ter. We are convinced of its su
periority but still it .must be
proven locally and in the world.
One of the most attractive fea
tures, Leschi said, is that manu
facturers are trying to make color
sets which cost only twice the
price of black and white receiv
ers "rather than three times the
price as in the United States and
Canada."

Polished Walter Brennan Shows
Acting Ability In 'Real McCoys'
EDITORS NOTE: One of the
most Interesting but oft-negleeted
aspects nf television celebrities is
life off the screen. Do they step
completely out of character when
not before the cameras? Is the
bouncing extrovert of a video
show actually a shy, retiring per.
son in private life, the ruthless
killer a real-life softie? And what
about their home and family
lives or their politics? .With this
issue of the Entertainment Page,
UPI Newsfcatures begins a se
ries of weekly profiles on lead
ing video personalities stressing
these non-professional facets.
By VERNON SCOTT
UPI Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD I UPI) To look
at Walter Brennan in "The Real
McCoys" you'd never guess that
he'd ever worn anything but over
alls and button shoes jn his life.
He s that good an actor.
At 68 Brennan holds the distinc
tion of being the only actor to
win three Academy Award Os
cars. This accounts, in part, for
his convincing portrayal of testy
old Grandpa Amos McCoy in the
video scries.
But like most of the really out
standing perfoimers, Brennan is
an entirely different man than the
one you see on your screen
He is soft-spoken, without the
slightest trace of that grandpa
cackle, and as bright as new-
paint. He is a wealthy man who
refuses to discuss his finances,
and an avid Republican who will
talk politics at the drop of a
Democrat.
Dislikes Snobbish Actors
An easy man to get to know,
Brennan dislikes pretentious ac
tors and berates "method" types
who worry about "motivation."
Brennan's penetrating blue eyes
reflect the Yankee shrewdness of
his forbears. A native of Swamp
scott, Mass., the actor is de
scended from New England pio
neers. He cleans mis oacK-gi-ound
for his straightforward
approach to the truth.
During his 43 vears as an ac
tor, various press agents and mis
guided advisors have tried to
glamorize W:alter as a Harvard
man.

snorted. "I wouldn't have gone to
Harvard if I had the chance. 1
attended Rindge Technical High
School in Cambridge, and didn't

Brennan's mistrust of the feder
al government, heightened when
ever the Democrats are in office.

Yankee Division. While at the
front he received a letter from
his draft board threatening him
with a fine and imprisonment i(

When Brennan isn t occupied
with his show he keeps busy Willi
his investments and ranch prop

fruit trees in Moorpark. Calif.. 50

Brennan's durability is a tele
vision phenomenon. His show is
in its sixth vcar, moving from

have been completed to date, but
Walter plans to slow down next
year, appearing in only 22 of the

Beauty Contest Winner
Avoids Hollywood Test
HOLLYWOOD (UPD - Pretty
Daiia Banks is one of the few
16-vcar-old beauty contest win
ners in America who wouldn't
jump at the chance to lake a
Hollywood screen test.
Miss Banks, a dimpled young
lady from Fresno, Calif., was
named "Miss Tccn-Age America
last year and one prize was a
screen test.
"I didn't think I'd get the part,"
said Darla, quite simply citing
that excuse as her reason (or
turning down the lest. "And even
it I did pass the test it would be
just for one role. After that I
would have acting in my blood
but might not get any more
part.
Right now I don't want an act
ing career, in fact I don't want
any career. I want to get mar
ried if I can. 1 realize that might
be difficult."
Darla. a Fresno high school
student, was riresed in a sweat
er, skirt and low heeled shoes.
Hrr victory in the "Miss Teen
age" competition in October came
as a surprise to Darla who in
sists it wasn't a tvpical beauty
contest complete with balhing
suits.
"If it was I wouldn't have won"
she said. "You should have seen
some of the girls. We were judged
on personality, intelligence and
talent. I sing, if you want to call
it that."
Darla swayed the judges with
a rendition nf "A Sweet OH
Fashioned Girl." To complete the

world a dirt farmer who some
how had stumbled into Hollywood
by mistake.
But his costars and most other
actors in Hollywood sing his
praisef as a performer.
He's proud of his professional
standing, but reticent to talk of
his accomplishments. His three
Oscars are all for supporting per
formanccs: "Come and Get II"
(1936), "Kentucky" (19381 and
"The Westerner" UiMOi.
And though he never attended
Harvard, Brennan can claim
college sheepskin. Morris Harvey

costume w hich her mother made
for $3.
Besides the screen test, which
she doesn't want, Darla won other
prizes. Included in her gift list
were a college scholarship, new
convertible automobile, scores o(
tennis shoes from t h e contest's
sponsor, a Caribbean cruise and
a watch.
Darla concedes the gifts arc
very nice. But such largesse was
the main reason she came to Hol
lywood with her mother, who also
looks like she could win a beauty
contest.
Even a teen ager realizes some
body has to pay taxes on such an
expensive set of gifts. So Darla
was in Hollywood taking one
quick acting job on a television
show, earning the needed cash for
laxes.
"I took the television role be
cause I knew it would be the only
one," said Darla. who says she'll
return to Fresno, complete
her commitments as "Miss Teen
age America" and retire from
the contest business.
"They let me rest during the
Christmas vacation," she said of
her queenly duties. "But now it's
starting up again and I'll prnla-
bly be gone three (nurths of the
summer."
