ELIZABETH. N.J. (UPD-The
word from Phil Rizzuto's hospi
tal bed is, "Don't worry fellas.
I'll be in shape for the next old
timers' game."
The former New York Yankee
shortstop's right hand was still
swathed in bandages following
Tuesday night's three-hour opera
tion to save three fingers from
amputation but. the little "Scoot
er" was in good spirits. He got
out of bed briefly Wednesday and
was described by nurses as "smil
ing and wanting to know when he
will go home."
Doctors said the 44-year-old one
time most valuable player of the
American League will remain in
tiie hospital for "several days."
Rizzuto's right hand was badly
mangled Tuesday in an accident
which occurred while he was run
ning a snow blower outside his
Hillside. N.J., home. It was feared
at first that he might lose two
fingers but a three-hour emerg
ency operation removed the threat
of amputation.
A hospital spokesman said doc
tors expect Hizzuto will regain
"complete mobility" of the hand.
