Portland's Tommy McVie hit a

to pick up Ihe .1-2 decision.
It was a heart breaking defeat
for the lowly Stampeders who
turned in one of their best season
efforts against the Bucs. They
outshot Portland and kept
the Bucs' star nctmindor, Don
Head, under pressure all night.
The win enabled Portland to
open up lis gap over idle San
Francisco and Los Angeles to four

the It has been an uphill fight with
many set-backs, but now the
boxing talent in Portland is as
good as anywhere in the U.S.
These boys are all young, up
and coming fighters, and most
of them have jobs and are raising
families. They have one thing in
common, they want to be cham
pion of the world in their reswe-
tive weights, and are working very
hard for that goal.
Vearl Sherman, promoter for
PBA and one of the stockhold
ers ol the company, has been
very insistent that all the boys
come in for the fights in tip-top
shape. We want to give the peo
ple their money s worth, Sher
man says. "We cannot make ev
eryone train for a fight, but if the
kids fighting out of Portland do
not show up at the gym and train
then they are not put on the
shows. We are trying to develop
good, tough fighters along with
men of character. We are work
ing along with the World Boxing
Association, not only to train and
team them and show them, but
make available to them good solid
investments, Sherman says.
Sherman has a good card lined
up with some good fighters. Com
ing in to fight a middleweight
light will he Mexico's Ramon
i Buffalo i Hernandez. He will take
on an area fighter in "Chief" Ken
Carouthers, formerly of Grants
Pass, now fighting out of Port
land.
Hernandez has had 42 pro fights
with M wins, five losses and a
draw. He has never been knocked
nut and his last fight was against
Portland s fast rising young mid
dleweight Bohhy Horn. He lost a
ival.
Memphis State, which accepted
a bid to New York's National In
vitation Tournament Tuesday af

61-59 victory over Dayton be
fore an overflow crowd at Mem
phis, and Canisius, also bound fur
the NIT, took a side trip to
Canada for a fil-47 triumph over
Western Ontario.
Second-ranked Duke, boasting a
14-game winning streak and a
20-2 record but which must still
earn its ticket to the NCAA, came
from behind tn down .Maryland,
6-70; loth-ranked Georgia Tech
kept its Southeastern Conference
hoiies alive by beating Tennessee.
72-tiO: and 14th-ranked Texas
moved within one game of clinch
ing a tie for the Southwest Con
ference title by whipping Texas
ASM, 83-7:1.
In other games with tournament
hearing Tuesday night. Rhode Is

first place in the Yankee Confer
