PALM SPRINGS, Calif. 'DPI I
-Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player,
two of the world's great goiters,
tangle for the Palm Springs Golf
Classic championship today in an
10-hole medal-play playoff.
To the winner will go $9,000,
while the loser will collect $4,600.
"But when you consider they
have to go 103 holes to win the
championship." said PGA Tour
nament Director Joe Black, "it
doesn't figure as very good pay."
With the 18-hole playoff, the
classic turned into a 108-hole mar
athon, because it is a 90 hole tour
nament regularly.
rhis will be a battle between
the National Open champion
i Nicklaus I and the United States
PGA king (Player).
hue they've both been in play
offs before, they've never met
head-on against each other
they will do in this one on the
Indian Wells course. The compe
tition starts at 11 a.m. EST, and
they'll also split hall the gate re
ceipts.
