Tightrope Walker Swings Hand-Over-Hand On Cable To Freedom In West Germany
BERLIN (UPI)-An East Cer
man tightrope walker told today
how he inched to safety along a
high-tension cable into West Ber
lin in the near-zero darkness of a
night during Christmas week.
Horst Klein, 36, felt free to tell
"his story because the Communists
are believed to have discovered
and blocked his hazardous escape
route.
Klein broke both arms and suf
fered other injures. A West Berlin
fireman eventually rescued him.

pital, but has now been dis
charged.
The daring German said he dis
covered his spectacular csca
route by chance. He was trying
to find some way In slip past lied
guards on the ground when he
ran into a power pole in the dark.
Under cover of darkness, he
scrambled up the pole until he
could sec the cables leading
across the border.
"I knew I must not touch the
cables while I was still holding
the mast, or I would be electro
cuted," Klein said. "I sprang out
ward and caught huld of a big
porcelain insulator.
"I saw the border below me.
Searchlights were shining, but I
was in darkness. . . Hand over
hand, I began to inch along the
cable."
When his hands stiffened in the
12-dvgree cold, Klein managed to
sw ing up into a sitting position on
the cable. He slid along toward
the next power pole, he swung
from an insulator and jumped to
the metal frame of the pylon to
rest.
Then he resumed his toilsome
progress. He nearly reached the
next pole before his strength gave
out and he fell to the ground,
breaking his arms and knocking
himself out.
Snow and darkness concealed
him both from the Reds and from
West Berliners who would have
rescued him.
Although lie was already in
West Berlin, he was still within

Husband, Wife Battle For Honors
In Alturas Rifle Club Shooting
" ALTURAS It is yearly team
shooting time at the Alturas Rifle
and Pistol Club, and the yearly
delemma of a husband and wife
shooting off for high average
again confronts the club. For the
past three years the pattern has
repeated itself as Emmy and Joe
Decs vie for top honors in the
club shoots. To date Joe has kept
a bare lead over Emmy, with a
284 average to her 2ft0.
"I have to come out and prac
tice extra nights to keep ahead
of her, though," Joe rewrts. To
this Emmy replies, "Ha, I can't

Joe shoots on the men's team
No. 1 and Emmy on the women's
team No. 3. On the nights the
two teams shoot together, they
have to come to the club in relays
to get their scores. One has to
slay home and baby sit the three
children. Joe will come early and
shoot and then rushes home to
watch the kids while Emmy
drives out the club to shoot her
score.
This year the gun club has four
teams shooting in the competition
that will end the last of February.
to date Team No. 2 and Team
No. 4, made up of the DcMolay
boys of Alturas, are tied for first
place.

Kennedy may visit Britain this
spring for a new look at the West
ern alliance with Prime Minister
Harold Macmillan. diplomatic
sources reported today,
Tlio sources said no firm ar
rangements had been made yet
but tlic British government is hop
ing Kennedy will slop liere after

many. Macmillan and Kennedy are be
