'Laser1 Light Used
To Picture Damage
PASADENA. Calif. U PI' - A
Caltech scientist disclosed Satur
day he had devised a way for
using a "laser" light beam to
solve a problem which has dogged
the Navy and shipping industry
for 100 years.
Dr. Albert T. Ellis, associate
prolessor of applied mechanics at
Caltech, said he had modified
iaser to make possible the photo
graphing of damage caused by
microscopic bubbles to ship pro
pellers. He said scientists also were
pressing his new powerful "stro
boscopic laser" into a wide var
iety of uses in communications,
medical instrumentat'on. welding
and possibly weajions.
Laser is a strong, narrow beam
of light stimulated by radiation.

II was said that the beam of

Dr. Ellis said "detailed obser

He has converted a laser's ran

watt bulbs.
"This will provide enough light
for the extremely short exposures
necessary in taking motion pic
tures of very fast events." Dr.
Ellis explained.
1 After the session there was agree
ment among parlicpants on a
point which may have been ob
scured by the withdrawal of of
fensive planes and missiles by the
Russians:
The Russians have, in the last
six months, moulded their forces
in Fidel Castro's island empire
into a powerful military complex
which doubles as an important
base for political subversion in
the hemisphere.
In a related development, dip
lomatic sources reported that
iRusk had advised Argentine For
jeign Minister Carlos M. Muniz
I that action to counter Communist
I subversion in Latin America may
be recommended soon to the Or
jganizalion of American Stales
i OAS i.
The administration has nearly
finished an appraisal of subver
sion throughout the hemisphere
and of the support it gets from
Cuba. The appraisal is part of a
long-range policy plan to deal with
Cuba.
