headed for the $50,000, 90 holc
marathon Desert Classic at Palm
Springs today with $1.1,500 in their
pockets after finishing one-two.
Burke, closing with a great four-
under-par 67 on the final found
had a 276 score and collected
$9,000. January, who had started
the final round one shot in front
of the field, had a closing 71 for
279 and $4,600.

Burke, who will be 40 years old
Tuesday, has been haunled by a
hand injury for years. It finally
forced him to give up the tour
for about half of each year.
"It's so had that I can't prac
lice at all or it gets sore," said
Jackie. "So I just quit practicing
and take my chances in the tour-namcnts."
He hasn't won since capturing
the Buick Open at Flint, Mich.,
in 1961, when he also picked up
a $9,000 first prize. But he played
in only 21 tournaments last year,
and he plans to play in even less
this year.
Arnold Palmer, in a rut of pars,
didn't get a hirdie for .10 holes
until the 18lh Sunday. Even thel Dave Marr finished with a 65 for
fabled "Arnic's Army" deserted
him and he finished with a 74 fur
a 283 and $!IOO far back of the
leaders.
Charley Silford, who four-putted
the first green, George Knudson
and Paul Harney each wound up
with 230 and each collected $2,633.

Driver Dies

driver was killed.
M. I). I Hod I Scfton, a 27-year-
old father of two from Ontario,
Calif., who drove only as a hobby,
was killed during time trials for
the 1110-mile California Racing As
sociation Western States Cham
pionship. His car hit the crash wall on
the backslretch, flip)ed over and
over, and landed upside down
across the track near the infield.
Ho was pronounced dead on ar
rival at Good Samarilan Hospital.
Billy Cantrell of San Gabriel,
Calif., won tlie IDOmile race,
which was marred by other acci
dents. Jist November, during the Bob
by Ball Memorial Race which

slouch. The six-foot-five southpaw,
who was the tallest major league
player of his time, pitched in the
National League for 21 years, win
ning 266 games and losing 251.
Clarkson. a rubber-armed right
handed pitcher, won 51 games and
lost 16 for Chicago of the National
League in 1884. He pitched a no-
hitter against Providence of the
old NL the following year and re
tired in 1894 with a lifetime rec
ord of 328 victories against 176
losses. He died at the age of 47
in 1909.
