Cameron claimed Tuesday that
employment figures put out by
Atty. Gen. Robert Y. Thornton on
a telecast in Portland Sunday
were wrong.
Cameron added that he is very
disturbed" over the fact that the
inaccurate figures were released
by an assistant attorney general
assigned to Cameron's office by
Thornton.
On the telecast Thornton said
official stale figures showed that
Oregon has lost jobs during the1
Republican administration of Gov.
Mark Hatfield.
In a letter to Thornton. Cam
cron said the contrary is true.
Oregon's average employment,
Cameron said, increased from
M4.300 in 1958 to 677.200 in 1961
The national job rate increased
4.4 per cent nationally, and 5.1
per cent in Oregon, he added.
Thornton said Oregon lost 16,
000 jobs in manufacturing since
1958, but Cameron said that in
fact, Oregon has gained 2,000
such jobs the past three years.

Estimate Shows Prison Labor Cuts

Air Lift To India Set
WASHINGTON (ITU - The
United Stales will start air lifting
military aid equipment to India
this week, the State Department
announced today.
Department spokesman Lincoln
White said the equipment, which
India requested for its border
warfare with Red China, is ex
pected to include light infantry
weapons, ammunition and trans
port and communications equipment.
"We expect the first priority
items to be airlifted lo India this
week," White said.
White said the United States
would provide airlift facilities.
Other officials said Britain and
Canada were cooperating with the
United States on military aid for
India.
The State Department spokes
man said: "The decision to sup
ply defense assistance to India in
response to Prime Minister
Nehru's request is prompted by a
specific situation. That situation is
created by massive Chinese Com
munist aggression is a serious de
velopment and is so regarded by
this government. In extending as
sistance to India, we are respond
ing to an urgent need arising
from a situation which is of con
cern not only to this country but
to our allies as well."

estimated today that if organized
labor is successful in preventing
the state from using inmate labor
on state projects, it will cost an
other $10 million a biennium to
operate stale institutions.
They contend that the action
would apply to all wards, not just
inmates of the penitentiary.
Appling and Belton are mem
bers of the State Board of Con
trol, which oversees the institu
tions.
The Oregon AFL - CIO has
brought suit against the board
seeking to prohibit it from using
prison labor to build the new
women's prison here.
They said they expert a simi
lar suit will soon be filed by the
Oregon printing industry, joined

The laws being questioned, they
said, apply not only to prison in
mates but also to "all wards of
our state institutions."
