Violators Up
SALEM (AP) Convictions of
motorists for traffic law violations
'are up 15'i per cent in the first
10 months of 1961 over the same
period last year, the state Motor
I Vehicles Department said today.
The department said it received
reports of 192,000 convictions
through October of this year. Part
I of the increase was attributed to
the use of uniform traffic cita-
itions, which simplifies the court's
reporting of convictions.
Convictions and records of all
accidents of motorists are re
corded by the department in its
master license file.
Convictions were recorded for
20.500 drivers in October.
Licenses of 476 were suspended
during the month. All but 160 of
them were suspended by the de
partment. The rest were sus
pended by the courts, which rec
ommended fewer suspensions than
in the year before.
There were 223 drivers whose
licenses were suspended for driv
ing while intoxicated and another
235 suspended for another full
year because they were caught
driving while their licenses were
suspended. License suspensions
are mandatory in both cases.
Others lost their licenses tem
porarily for poor driving records.

600 grade school and high school
journalism students attended the
25th annual Oregon School Press
Conference at Portland State Col
lege Saturday.
The conference was sponsored
by Portland newspapers and the
Oregon Tuberculosis and Health
Association. Those who attended
listened to talks about newspaper
work, and about the activities of
the tuberculosis association.
In the afternoon, the students
toured the newspapers' opera
