WASHINGTON lTP-n econ

subcommittee today that patents
for drugs be abohslicd. '
Dr. Colston E. Warne, Amlierst

be given "monopolistic control"
through pat&its over drugs which
miglti be vital to the health of
millions of persons.
"In the kind of life we live to
day," Warne said, "a drug can

Inf Hearings Resume
The statement came in test!-

subcommittee on a proposed drug
cunUol bill. . -
The legislation is sponsored fiy
subcommittee Chairman Estes Ke-

that ethical drug prices are "gen

Warne also is president of Con
sumers Union, of Mount Vefnon,
N.Y., a non-profit group which
tests consumer products and Is
sues the monthly magazine con

Warne said manufacturers cf
prescription drugs had abused the
patent system by "jiggling the
names in the molecular chemical
composition," while "charging
orbitant prices" for supposedly

Asks Pn'ent Abolishment
He said the patent provisions of
tin Kcfauver bill did not go far
enough. The bill calls for exclusive
rights to patents on drugs to be
reduced from the present 17 to
three years. It also would require
a patent holder to license any oth- ,
cr manufacturer for the remain
ing 14 years in return for 3 per
cent royalty.

He recommended that the bill
be altered "so as to eliminate

Airlines jet liner Aug. 3. : -'
Bearden received near maxi

three federal laws in the hijack

ed guilty to similar charges, was
sentenced to an undesignated fed

A federal court jury found the
elder Bearden guilty Oct. 18 of

Reds Remove
Stalin Name '
MOSCOW (UPD-Sovict work
men today began removing Sta
ling nam from the Red Square
tomb which now will belong to
Lenin alone.
The work began late today after
the 22nd Communist Party Con
gress voted to move the former
Soviet dictator's body from the
tomb to an undisclosed location.
It is assumed here that Stalin's
remains may already have bcVn
removed via an undirfiound lun
ncl from the tomb to the Kremlin.
About 600 Soviet citizens gath
ered on Red Square in the chilly
dark of this late fall evening to
walcb the final act of humiliation
(or Stalin.
Working behind a wooden fence
put up at some distance from the
tomb, the workmen busily chipped
and hammered on the red and
black marble nameplate which
carries the name of both Lenin
and Stalin.
It was assumed the work was
being speeded o a new name.
