WASHINGTON (UP1) - So far
those 350 million liny copper
needles fired into space by the
United States haven't posed the
' danger Russian spaceman Gher
'-mas Titov and some Western set
enlists predicted.
'.y In fact, no one even knows
- where the needles are.
The Air Force said today they
have not been spotted by either
radar or radio waves in a space
search being conducted by the
Massachusetts Institute of Tech
nology's Lincoln Laboratory at
Lexington, Mass.
The needles, designed to test
the possibility , of a jam-proof
communications system, were
launched Oct. 21 from Point Ar-
guello, Calif., as a piggy-back
' package on a Midas satellite.
The hair-like needles were sup
. posed to form a band around the
earth at an altitude of 2,100 miles
; to serve as a reflector for radio
-waves sent from one part of the
world to another. But the Air
Force announced last week that
no trace of the needles could be
found.
Titov charged in Moscow last
week that the needle experiment
was a "reckless step interfering
with peaceful conquest of space.
Some Western scientists com
plained that the needles might in
terfere with satellites and with
astronomical observations of the
heavens.
Jurors Keep
Court Busy
: County Clerk Charlie DeLap and
Sheriff Murray (Red) Britton have
been busy during the current term
of circuit court.
DeLap and Britton have drawn
the names of 241 prospective jur
ors since the court term began
. on June 21. According to the two
county officials, about one-third
of the persons could not be lo-
eated, another third were excused
r.for a wide ranging variety of rea-
.sons and the final third were ac
-tually available to serve.
A special venire of 70 names
was drawn Monday morning for
the re-trial of the Johnnie Lee
Williamson armed robbery case.
A mistrial was declared earlier
this month In the sarae case due
to illness in the family of one of
the jurors. , '
Jurors are paid at the rate of
$7.50 a day plus 10 cents a mile
, DeLap said increasing jury ex
.pense was one of the reasons for
. a near 40 per cent increase in the
current circuit court budget. An
. other reason, of course, has been
-the addition of a second circuit
judge for Klamath County.

Arraigned
Gary R. Dahlstrom, 28-jear-old
Klamath Falls appliance repair
man, was arraigned Monday eve
ning in district court on the fel
ony charge of larceny by bailee
Dahlstrom, 1726 Oregon Avenue,
' appeared with his attorney and
asked for a preliminary hearing.
Which was set for 9:30 a.m. next
'Tuesday by Judge Hal F. Coe.
' The information of felony was
'signed by Edward G. DeLyria,
2425 Summers Lane. DeLyria ac
cused Dahlstrom of appropriating
a studio bed, daveno and youth
bed which had been entrusted to
his care. The furniture was val
ued at more than $75.

Hood Dies
In Medford
Delmann Osborne Hood, 74, who
had been active In business and
' professional affairs In the North
west since 1920, died in Medford
Oct. 28.
With a brother, the late Ernest
B. Hood, he entered into the pub
lic utilities field in 1928 with Co
lumbia Utilities Company. The
firm owned independent telephone
properties in Southern Oregon and
Northern California, serving the
telephone public of Merrill, Ma
' lin, Tulelake and other surround
ing towns In the Klamath Basin.
- He also served as a director
of the First National Bank of
Klamath Falls. He had lived In
' Medford since 1942. His widow,
' Mrs. Elizabeth Hood, survives.
Family Night
Scheduled
A special family night will be
staged by Women of the Moose,
Chapter No. 467 at 8:30 p.m. Sat
urday, Nov. 4, at the Moose Hall,
1010 Pine Street.
The evening will open with a
potluck dinner for the entire lam
ily. Afterwards there will be
games for the younger children
dancing for teen-agers and enter
tainment (or the adults.
