anything that detracts from their

Until -A year or so ago, I hated getting
up in the morning. Hiding in my warm
bed spared me all the terrible, mixed-up
feelings I had whenever I met people.
I'd deliberately stay up late and write
lyrics or music. Everything was quiet after
midnight, and I was alone in my cocoon:
either in a hotel room when I was singing
on the road or my den when I was home.
What made me so afraid, so unhappy
about facing the world? To tell the truth,
I didn't really understand this myself. But
I knew I didn't like certain things: the way
I looked and the way people poked fun at
me for being "a little runt with a lot of
nerve." It was easier to duck all these
cheeked. And I was very worried about the
way my nose would photograph. My nose
always had dominated my face like a big
bird with its wings outspread.
In Hollywood, the casting people took one
look at me and went into a huddle. I knew
what it was about: my appearance.
After they came out of their conference,
they asked me to see a Mr. Vincent, who
ran a gym. Glum and downhearted, I went
to see him without much hope. Vincent was
tall, muscular, a perfect specimen of health.
As he talked I began to get a funny feeling
that maybe everything wasn't as terrible as
it seemed. He said I had good bone struc
ture, that my physique was well-propor-

thoughts by sleeping. Or, worse, by eating.
Whenever I wasn't sleeping, I was nib
bling on sweets. As a performer, I knew I
had to watch my appearance, but I just
didn't have the will power.
One day about three years ago, my man-
ager Ervin Feld, who's like a big brother,
said, "Paul, you're not going to like what
I'm going to tell you."
Trying to appear calm, I said, "What is
it, Erv?"
"I want you to lose weight. I want you
to be a great singing idol, and if you keep
this up you're going to be nothing more than
a young has-been."
His words hit home. I had gained more
than 30 pounds in six months. I didn't fit
into any of my clothes. When I looked at
photos of myself, I wanted to tear them up.
That weekend we flew to Hollywood
where I was to write some of the songs
for a movie, "Girls' Town," and also appear
in it. I was excited about being in a film,
but I dreaded thinking what I would look
like on camera, pudgy and pumpkin-

tioned, and that I could get "into shape"
in no time at all.
I began exercising that day, but I couldn't
chin myself at all, and after a couple of
runs around the gym I was breathless and
exhausted. "Paul," Vincent said at the end
of the hour, "exercise isn't enough. You've
also got to watch what you eat. If you eat
goo, your body will be goo. If you eat right,
your body will be right."
Then he gave me the diet: no "goo," all
nourishment. I wanted to tell him he was
nuts. I couldn't follow a diet like that. When
I went back to the hotel, I told Ervin about
Vincent and the diet
"Why don't you give it a chance," Ervin
said, "before you give it up?"
- Ervin's words suddenly became a chal
lenge. So I stuck to the diet and exercised
with Vincent. At first we exercised strenu
ously for a half hour, but within two months
I did two hours at a stretch.
I could finally touch my toes! I could lift
dumbbells, tumble, chin myself. I could see
myself changing: my waist lost inches, my
