"We were taught sewing, cook
ing, embroidery, laundry, every
thing about the home in school.
German women look forward to
having their own homes, even if
they must do laundry by hand
Women here talk about their aw.
ful household chores and they
have more home conveniences
than any other women of the
world."
If U.S. women were educated to
know and enjoy homemaking, the
country could wipe out unemploy
ment, Elisabeth is convinced. Her
solution: "Get the American wom
en interested in their homes and
they will leave their jobs to the
men.
As for that second car, Elisabeth
savs, Germans are happy with
just one car. They don't use a
car for every trip to the market."
Husband Mike McDonald likes
Elisabeth's German dishes sauer
braten, sauerkraut and red cab-
bace-and she has learned In eat
and enjoy beans and smoked ham.
She explains Germans at pork
shoulder or fresh ham.
The couple met in Frankfurt.
Germany, when Mike w as assigned
to military duty and were mar
ried a year ago. Now a civilian,
21-vear-old Mike works as an auto-l
malic teletype operator.
Elisabeth confesses she is home
sick for Germany, which may be
lartor in her criticisms of this
country.
But she Is sure she will get over
her homesickness and adjust to
the American way of life in about
a year. It took her sister Erica
that long, she says, and "now the
would never go back to Germany
except to viff."
The young McDonalds live in a
four room furnished apartment.

VATICAN CITY (UPII-On the
night of July 12, 1880, a horse-,
drawn hearse, carrying a coffin
and followed by several carriages
left the Vatican.
On the bridge of Sant'Angclo, a
few hundred yards from the en
trance to the Vatican, a crowd of
several hundred persons wailed for
I he funeral cortege.
What happened is history and
demonstrates the change that has!
taken place in relations between
the Vatican and luly since those
days
The body in the coffin was that
of Pope Pius IX. During his 32
year reign in the history ol the Ro
man Catholic Church, Pius IX had
seen the collapse of the Church's
empire and the unification 'if Ita
ly.
In .I8fil. when Giuseppe Gari
baldi and his "Thousand" won
their long battle to unify the Ital
ian slates, the Pope became the
Prisoner of the Vatican."
He died in IR78 without ever
having left the Vatican following
the unification. His wish had been
to be buried in the Basilica of St.
Lawrence, about three miles from
the Vatican on the other side of
Rome. It had taken two years to!
complcle his tomb.
Anti-Vatican feeling still was
running high and Vatican officials
decided it would be best to take
the body of Ihe late Pontiff out in
the dead of night in an effort to
prevent trouble. But when Ihey
started tf cros the bridge they
found a mob waiting lor them

newspaper "Osservatore Roman
the Roman police did nothing to
disperse the crowd. The newspa-
per said the people began shout
ing "Into the river ith jht Pope"
. . . "Long live Ganbai'fc" .' . .
"Death to the Pope" . . . "Death
to priests."

California industrialists here.
At least 50 of the nation's lead
ing industrial lirms, they were
told, are engaged in research with
medical promise.
A Beckman Instruments Co.
gadget called an "Ultra-Micro
Analytical System" is now able
to make a complete blood analysis
from a drop just big enough to
fill the eve of a needle.
Lockheed Aircraft Corp. has
adapted from a light-weight satel
lite transmitter a "heart listener
the size of a package of cigarettes
which can broadcast directly or
through a telephone to an elec
trocardiograph in the doctor s of

"Some day we won't have to
wonder how we arc," said a Lock
heed official. "We can call up
our doctor and say, 'Doctor, how
am I?' and the doctor will take
a look at the information we are
broadcasting to him and say, 'I
don't like the way your heart
looks. Better chase yourself down

checking body temperature, pulse
rates, blood pressure and other
vital functions similar to the
medical hook-ups which relay the
condition of astronauts to earth
bound physicians are already in

Hospital permits one or a few
nurses to keep an eye on critically
ill patients. The device is credit
ed with saving the life of one

Killing Case
RAWLINS, Wyo. (API - Scien
tific detectives have solved the
Case of the Limping Mammoth.
What (tumped them at first was
not who killed Big Limpy but, how
did the killers catch him?
Evidence was scarce. After all,
the killing took place 12,500 years
ajto,
The site was amid the sage
brush 35 miles southwest of Raw
lins. A drag line operator was
cleaning out a spring for use by
an oil drilling crew when his
scoop unearthed a large bone. '
That was a signal for archeolo
gists, anthropologists and geolo
gists to move in. The initial Uni
versity of Wyoming team was
quickly joined by an 11-man field
crew from Harvard
The bones proved to be those of
a young mammoth.
Dr. Braincrd Mcars of the Uni
versity of Wyoming soon found
what appeared to have been the
lethal weapon. It was a fluted
spear point buried about 10 feet
from the animal s skull.
From a scientist's point of view,
this in itself was an important
find. It associated the animal with
early man. Dr. Mears says there
are not more than six sites in
North America where the remains
of mammoths and spear points
have been found together.
This picture began to emerge:
Big Limpy was young but In
some way Incapacitated. He hob
bled along as best he could but
he could not keep up with the
herd. When he stopped for a drink
at the spring he was an easy mark
(or hunters.
Big Llmpy's bones were sent to
the University ol Wyoming for
cleaning, chemical preservative
treatment and eventual assembly.
There scientists discovered the
clue to Ihe mammoth's trouble:
he was a victim of arthritis.
