Lose Rights
CHICAGO (AP)-The five soror
ities at suburban Lake Forest Col
lege have lost their national char
ters in a dispute over the right of
national sorority officials to dic
tate local policy relating to racial
and religious discrimination.
President William Gralftm Cole
said he had notified the college's
7,800 alumni that the charters
were withdrawn because of polic
ies adopted by the school's trust
ees in 1958 and last June. The
trustees, in resolutions, stated that
they no longer tolerate national
control of fraternity and sorority
policy in selecting members of
Lake Forest chapters.
The resolutions stated that tlie
college would recognize only those
social or fraternal organizations
having complete autonomy in se
lecting their local membership."
Cole, in his letter to the alumni,
said that the college is opposed to
discrimination. He said that the
college is not insisting that "any
group on campus must include
members of minority groups,1

Course Set
Group Leadership courses have
been scheduled for Girl Scout,
leaders during the month of Octo
ber, according to Mrs. J. R. Jones,
Juniper Girl Scout Council train
ing chairman.
Opening session will be from
9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Fire
side Room of First Presbyterian
Church. Leaders will bring sack
lunches, but coffee will be pro
vided. Babysitting will be provid
ed.
Purpose of the annual fall course
is to acquaint new personnel with
aims and goals of the Girl Scout
program, give leadership skills to'
put the program Into action, teach'
activities and inform leaders of
the resources and helps available
from the Council Area office.
Sessions will continue at the
same time on Oct. 11, 18 and 25.
Actual practice will be provided
for the leaders, including outdoor

bia Gay Chafins Hagerman, 23,
a divorcee and mother of a 9-year-old
daughter, died Thursday
night of a snake bile suiterea
while handling a rattlesnake dur
ing a rural church service.
The woman refused medical at
tention and died at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Elkins, her
stepfather and mother. Elkins is
lay leader of the Church in Jesus
at Jolo where the victim was bit
ten Sunday.
"We stayed in steady prayer
since it happened," Mrs. Elkins
said, "and she prayed with us.
"We feel when He don't heal us.
He has a better purpose."
Elkins said it was the first time
the victim had handled snakes.
She became ill about three min
utes after she was bitten.
