PASADENA, Calif. (API Ethel
Waters, who says she is sick,
broke and jobless, has this mes
sage for friends who worry about
her:
'I have never been so happy
in all my life. The Lord has his
arms wrapped around this big.
fat sparrow. I'm sitting on the
edge of Heaven."
Except for an occasional tele-.
vision appearance, the 61-year-old,
250-pound singer and actress has
been out of work for five years.
"If I tried real hard I might be
able to rustle up $5," she told
an interviewer.
Miss Waters made such pictures
as "Cabin in the Sky and "Mem
ber of the Wedding." for which
she received an Academy. Award
nomination. Songs she helped
make famous included "Am I
Blue?" and "Stormy Weather."
Her autobiography, "His Eye
Is on the Sparrow," was a best
seller 10 years ago.
Now white-haired, Miss Waters
has a room in the house of a Pas
adena family. She says she suf
fers from high blood pressure.

May. 19fi0. she suffered a heart
attack which hospitalized her for
months, and has limited her ac
tivities ever since.

again, she said. "But I'm not
afraid to die. In fact, I'm kinda

the Lord has his arms wrapped

Miss Waters says her religious
beliefs forced her out of show
business.
"I got good offers from famous
men," she said. "They wanted

brings on gales of laughter.
"I sold everything 1 owned to
pay off that bill," she said. "I
sold my house, my car, and ev
erything else. But I paid cm.
I don't owe a cent to anyone."
And she broke into another
booming laugh, when she said:
"Oh, precious, if half of the
people that owed me money
would pay it back, I'd be a rich
woman again."

Into Glamor Entertainment Park

profitable entertainment area
ailed Pacific Ocean Park.
A sort of Disneyland-by-the-sca.
POP came into existence and
survived a tidal wave of red ink
largely through the work of Ben
A. O'Dorisio. president and minor
stockholder.
The park opened July 22. 1058,
and lost money the first two sc.t
sons. But O'Dorisio reports it now
is safely in the black because of
a policy he calls Pay One Price,
which, conveniently enough for bill
boards, has the same initials as
the park.
The customer, adult or child,
shells out $1.73 for admittance,
more than 40 attractions and danc
ing in the POP Pavillion to the
music of Freddy Martin.
"It's fantastic," said O'Dorisio.
"Most of the top parks around

hood for Phyllis Curtin will not
be a handicap to her career, but
something to give her new cheer.
"You can bet that this baby
will be the most-traveled in the
world," the beautiful prima don
na said in her upper West Side
apartment where she lives with
her photographer-husband, Genel
Cook. .
Miss Curtin became a major
opera figure about five years ago
when she starred in Salome at
the New York City Opera and
since has performed the taxing
title role in Europe and South
Africa.
There also is the story that
Miss Curtin. on three hours' no
tice, stepped on stage at the Vi
enna State Opera and sang the
Cio Cio San role in "Madarri
Butterfly" even though she had
not previously seen this com
pany's production of the Puccini
classic about the fickle American
naval officer and a Japanese girl.
She received. an ovation.
Such critics as Howard Taub
man of the New York Times have
hailed her as a "superb" singer,
She combines this great singing
ability with a natural knack lor
acting that doubles her value on
stage.
But the most startling aspect
about this West Virginia-born sing
er is ncr neauty. She Is so photo
genic that pictures of her hang
in many of the more sophisticat
ed restaurants. .

SACRAMENTO (UPI) On or
about Aug. .1, 1963, California will
pass New York and become the
most populous state in the na
tion. Carl M. Frisen, chief of the
state's population studies -section,
said when that day dawns both
California and New York will
have a population of 17.436,000.
But by nightfall California will
have moved ahead because it
gains about 1,500 new citizens a
day. while New York gains only
about 533.
California's population now Is at
just under 16.5 million. The count
was made last July 1, at the close
of a year during which the slate
added 505,000 residents. This was
sufficient to create a new Seattle.
Wash., or Buffalo, N.Y., or 20?
Hominy, Oklahomas.
Although most persons believe
California's population boom be
gan after World War II, the slate
has averaged 45 per cent growth
during every decade since the
Civil War. It took so long to
catch New York because it start
ed with only a few Spanish ranch
ers. If California had depended on
its subsequent birth rate to make
population grow, would it continue
to trail New York? But it hasn't;
it has regularly lured full-grown
persons from elsewhere.
During the decade from 1050 to
I960, for i n ( t a n c e, California
gained S.l million residents. Only
39 per cent entered via a hospital,
the rest came over the state line.
Seventy one per cent of the im
migrants who arrived between
1950 and 1960 settled in lhe eight
counties of Southern California,
which Includes Los Angeles. But
later Immigrants appear to he dis
covering the 50 counties of North
ern California. During the year
ending last July 1, immigrations
to these areas increased to 44 per
cent of the total.

tomatic radio station, a swank
night club and rides galore.
The idea for the park came to
O'Dorisio and a business associ
ate, William H. Jaynes, when the
two were working for the Los
Angeles Turf Club (Santa Anita)
managing its Lake Arrowhead
properties.
With the Turf Clulj and the Co
lumbia Broadcasting System (CBS
putting up the money, POP was
built at a cost of $10 million
With other costs, the plant set the
owners back about $15 million
O'Dorisio said.
John M. Morehart, real estate
developer and rancher, bought
way producers have sought to cast
her in musicals. She has politely!
turned them down, preferring Uicj
opera stage and concei t hall.
Miss Curtin does not cater to
convention in concert halls.
A soprano generally sings the
same numbers in a concert, but
it is more likely that Miss Curtin
will sing unfamiliar tunes to an
unfamiliar audience..
'In opera, a singer has other
singers and an orchestra to help
make the work easier, Miss
Curtin said. "But on the concert
stage, the singer has only her
accompanist.
"For his reason I sing the
songs t want to sing. At first the
audience may feel that I should
have chosen numbers they know,
but I've found that they soon find
they like whatever I have select
ed."
Just to look at her is worth
the price of admission.

"They were a great asset," said
O'Dorisio of the original own
ers. "I've never worked for finer
people. We were fortunate to have
groups of that stature backing it.

I think it was just a matter of
lime. We originally set a five-year
deadline in w hich to show results,
but we made big inroads last
year.
The old Ocean Park Pier, which
went up in flames three times,
thus became ft tourist attraction.
O'Dorisio said the Federal Re
development Agency is planning
to tear out much of the surround
ing blighted area in Santa Monica
and Los Angeles (POP is on the
border) and build a $60 million
development with shopping center
and about 2,000 living units.
And O'Dorisio can always count
on the drawing power of the Pa
cific Ocean itself. ;
"Most of all, I enjoy it," said
O'Dorisio. "I don't think you could
run an amusement park without
enjoying it." '
