Owl Victory String Threatened;
Beefv Whitworth Heavvl
There is an odds-on possibility
that the spectacular victory string
chalked up by the Oregon Tech

The Techmen, defending the
Oregon Collegiate Conference
championship and a string of ten
straicht wins counting their tri

Evergreen Conference, the Whit
worth Pirates.
The game, the first for the Pi

played in Spokanes' Memorial Col

area's major sports attractions.
The Techmen, including injured
halfback Bud Maupin who is slat,

on their preparations for the P1
rates this afternoon. Head coach
Rex Hunsakcr and his aides
George Miller and Jim Cordial
have posted a tentative starting
offensive lineup which includes
quarterback Bill Ransome, full
back Stan Glass, and fiallbacks
Bob McCluro, a sophomore from
Eagle Point, and Jack McCreary,
the hard running ex-Springfie!d
star.
His offensive line will include
Roger Hooper at left end, Jim
Madden at left tackle, Ed Ander
son at guard, Don Anderson at
center, Andy Cook at right guard.
Claire Hawkins at right tack.e
and South Salem freshman Jack
Fox at right end.
His defenses will feature Cook
at safety, Wayne Dennis and Lan-
ny Myers at halfback slots and
Al Bean and Hooper as lineback

The Ashlanders, led by speedy
halfback Bob King, battled to a
0-0 standoff with powerful Shas
ta of Redding the last time out,
and outgained them 121 to 89 in
overall yardage.
The Grizzly line, as promises to
be the case with most of the for
ward walls the Pels will face this
season, have a distinct weight ad
vantage over the KU eleven.
But, as head coach Bob Wil
liams explained to the largest!
gathering of Pelican Boosters In
years, "That's something we just;
have to live with.

a number of his players, men

Basin Prognosticotors
A number of the offensive line
men will go both ways.
Leading the Pirate offense this
year will be quarterback Denny
Spurlock, who last year lead the
nation in total pass yardage for
small colleges. Again this season
Spurlock has shown his ability in
hitting his receivers with phenom
enal regularity,
In Saturday s scrimmage, which
Coach Ken Adams termed "very
satisfying indeed," Spurlock com
pleted 12 of 15 pass attempts tor
242 .yards. John Hula Murio
snagged four of Spurlock's tosses
for 144 yards and two touchdowns,
proving that he will again be an
elusive down field runner after
catching the ball. Other outstand-l
ing receivers from last year s club
are end Wendell Witt, and Halt-
backs Les Rurey, Norm Harding,
and Rex Schimke.
Coach Adams and his assist-
fense. He also noted that he was
proud of the fact that, "We had
no cry-babying after losing that1
one to North Salem. We just plain
lost it, and every one of us had
a hand in it. There was no horse
play after the game. The kids
talked strictly football. It the pres
ent spirit and attitude displayed
continue, we 11 have a good sea
son."
The Pelican preparations for the
Grizzly invasion, were completed
this afternoon in a light drill em
phasizing specialty work and a
review of plans to stop the ex
pected Ashland running attack.
Williams planned to name his
starters at the completion of to
day's drills. The complete Ash
land lineup will also be available
Friday.
The Bonanza Antlers and the
Tulclake Honkers are both mak
ing their 1961 debut. For Sacred
Heart Academy the evening marks
their third start of the year.
The Antlers are matched with
the strong defending champion
Chiloquin Panther eleven in a
game to be played under the new
Henley lights beginning at 7:30.
Meanwhile tlie Henley Hornets
get their A-2 loop action underway
in a battle with Illinois Valley
starting at 8 p.m. on the Cougars'
home grounds.
Tulelnke plays host to perennial
rival Malin on the Honker grid
beginning at 8 o'clock also.
To round out the evening's ac
tion the SUA squad will tangle
with the Merrill Huskies at 7:30
in Gem Stadium, the site of all
SUA home games.
In the only games on tap for
high school squads Saturday the
Klamath Union Jayvccs match
talents with the Ashland JVs at
1 p.m. on the Griizlics home dele1,
while the Pelican freshmen do
battle with the McLoughlin junior
high eleven in Medford. The frosh
test begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
If the early season games are
any criterion, the B league strug
gle this year shapes up as a duel
between Chiloquin and Sacred
Heart.
The Panthers claimed a win
over Malin last weekend and have
also shared a 7-7 tio with the
Henley squad. The Trojans post
ed a convincing victory at the
expense of the KU Jayvees last
weekend after bowing to the
strong St. Marys Crusaders in the
annual classic,
o
worite
ants, Tom Black and Jim Up-
church, have for the past week
been running a 62-man Pira
squad through two-a-day workouts
This is the largest squad ever to
turn out in Whitworth football his
tory.
This year the Pirates will bal
ance their offensive attack with
a stronger running game in an ef
fort to ease the defensive pres
sure on quarterback Spurlock.
Leading the ground attack will be
lettermen Dennis Riegur, Rex
Schimke, freshman speedster Ed-
ker Matthews and. Don Samue's.
Coach Adams has been especial
ly pleased with the work of his
backfield men among whom he
singled out Les Rurey, Bruce Gra
dy, and Ed Matthews. Others
working well are frosh Bill Moul
trie, sophomore transfer Gene
Baker, senior Bruce Baker, and
offensive center Perry Morton.
In Saturday's game against Ore
gon Tech, the Bucs will field th2
heaviest defensive unit a Whit
worth team has ever put on the
gridiron. Leading the defense will
be Ken "Big Daddy Sugarman
at 235 pounds, letterman senior
Leo Hutchins at 225 pounds, Uni
versity of Washington transfer
Gene Baker at 215, George Rallis
from Boise Junior College at 230
pounds, and LaVaughn Stephens
from Washington State University,
weighing in at 205 pounds.

(3B$ Handoff
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The most unusual play in Ore
gon high school football last week
end came during Wy'East's first
victory over The Dalles, 34-0.
Wy'East guard. Grant Maurer,
did something few linemen ever
have achieved took a handoff
from the quarterback. 'r
The trouble was, for The Dalles
players, it was their quarterback.
The Dalles was driving toward
the Wy'East end zone when
Maurer sifted through the line
and took the ball from quarter
back Mark Jensen as he turned
to hand off to a The Dalles back.
The march ended, of course,
and Wy'East breezed to its his

Serious Talk
SEATTLE (AP) - Washington
football players, with heavy work
for the season opener against
Purdue here Saturday behind
them, had a solemn warning
Thursday about the bigtime sports
bribery scandals.
Coach Jim Owens had State
Atty. Gen. John J. O'Connell and
Dr. J. Gordon Gose, the school's
Big Five faculty representative,
talk to the squad Wednesday
night.
The two warned of the dangers
of any contact with gamblers,
point-shaving or attempting to in-
lluence the result of a game.
u uinnen saia ne had been in
close touch with the New York
grand jury probing recent athletic
bribery cases. He discussed ways
gammers corrupt athletes.
Gose said there had never been
the "slightest indication" of any
problem at Washington but added
"we would be remiss in our duty"
it tfte subject was not talked over,
O'Connell said Washington was
one of the few states with legisla
tion dealing directly with ' bribe
attempts in athletics. Earlier this
season Owens and his staff also
alerted the squad to the gambling
situation.
The school ticket office said
Saturday's game for the two-time
Rose Bowl winners will be vir
tually a sellout, with about 55,000
spectators.
