Yes, dear readers, it s once
again time for your favorite cor
respondeat to extend his greetings
and to assure you he will be back
at the old stand to forecast the
results of the season's major foot
ball contests. This gives promise
of being a banner year for the
Hoople System and I am Just
itching to plunge into the wars
Due to the great demands upon:
my time I have augmented my1
staff this year with the addition
of Hannibal Wottaburp. He will
work with my long-time assistant.
Dr. I. M. Inorbit, who Is on leave
from Cape Canaveral. It will take
several weeks for Hannibal to as
similate the finer points of the
Hoople System, but we will hear
plenty from him.
After an exhaustive study of

visiting Pittsburgh Panthers will

Casanova is working his Univer
sity of Oregon football squad on
special goal line offense and de
tense situations as he continues
twice-daily practices.
He introduced to new squad
members Tuesday his series of
automatic plays used when Ore
gon approaches an opponent's end
zone.
They also were briefed on vary
ing goal line defensive alignments
and maneuvers.
Casanova also drilled his de
fensive units against passing.
Idaho is expected to take to the
air extensively in the opener at
Eugene Sept. 23. Casanova re
called this has been Idaho's of
fensive history in recent games
with Oregon.
On offense coaches worked hard
with non-letterman quarterbacks
Doug Post, Max Choboian and
Ron Veres, trying to teach them
the techniques of option plays
which have proved so effective
for Oregon over the past several
years.
Casanova gave the men, some
of whom were nursing bruises
from last Saturday's intra-squad
game, a rest from scrimmage and
rough body contact.

Richest Race
CHICAGO (AP) - The world's
richest horse race a $130,000
added, $400,000 gross futurity
will be run in Chicago in 1962 at
Arlington Park.
The race, which will be held on
the first Saturday in September
next year, will combine the Ar
lington Park and Washington
Park futurities, annual tests for 2-
year-olds. Announcement of the
1962 combination was made Tues
day by Mrs. Marjorie Lindhelmer
Everett, president of Chicago Tho
roughbred Enterprises. I n c.
which operates Washington Park
and Arlington.
The single race, which replaces
the pair of $100,000 added events,
will reward the winner with ap
proximately $200,000.

Ncgro players on the San Fran
cisco 49cr squad said Tuesday
they will play in their team s Na
tional football League opener
against the Washington Redskins
Sunday.
The nine players had been asked
by the Congress of Racial Equal
ity (CORE) and the San Francis
co chapter of the National Asso
ciation for the Advancement of
Colored People to refuse to play
because the Redskins have never
hired a Negro player.
Defensive back Abe Woodson,
selected as spokesman for the
players, said, "This is different!
from situations where there are
segregated audiences and things
like that."

meeting was 448,819, an increase
of 1.9 per cent over last year. A
track record was set In wagering
this season ,$39,333,242. It rep
resented an increase of 8.8 per
cent over last year.

Izo, a pair of former Notre
Dame quarterbacks, were in dif
ferent uniforms today after Tues
day's busy day of transactions
between National Football League
clubs paring down to the 36-play-
cr limit.
With Sam Etcheverry's throwing
arm still a quesion mark because
of soreness, the St. Louis Cardi
nals grabbed, at the chance to land
the veteran Guglielmi from the
Washington Redskins in exchange
for Izo, a second-year man.
The deal, however, is condition
al and depends on Guglielmi re
covering from an injured back.
Cards' managing director Walter
Wolfnor said, It was represented
to us that nothing is wrong with
Guglielmi except a sprained back
and it should clear up in a few
days."
The Pittsburgh Steelers bol
stered their loose defense with
the addition of defensive halfback
Johnny Sample from the Balti-
mc: Colts and defensive end
Sieve Meilinger from the Dallas
Cowboys.
Released by the Steelers were
quarterback Terry Nofslnger and
linebacker Wlltwrt Scott.
The New York Giants placed
flanker back Jim Podoley on

DETROIT (UPI i The Detroit
Tigers, who foresee a prosperous
era ahead, have decided to let
manager Bob Scheffing steer the
course.
The 48-year-old pilot was re
warded Tuesday for his season's
work with a new two-year con
tract estimated at $40,000
boost over his old pact which still
has a year to run.
Club president John Fetzer in
making the announcement said:
"We feel that Scheffing has
done an excellent job of handling
our young players, blending them
with the veterans In a team
which plays as a unit. We're very
happy with the progress our club
has made this year.
Scheffing, who kept the Tigers
a miserable sixth one year ago
in nennant contention until 10
days ago, said he was "very
pleased with the new security.
I m not worried about security
with this club," he said. "We im
proved a lot this year and I think
we'll keep improving. We have a1
young club and our farm system
is developing players. I think
will continue to keep producing
top talent to keep us in good
shape for a number of years to
come."
Under Scheffing's field guid
ance and a new front-office effi
ciency bolstered by Fetzer, farm
director James Campbell and
general manager Rick Ferrell,
the Tigers have enjoyed an amaz
ing resurgence.
Although attendance in Detroit
always has been good, this year!
the gate may hit 1,700,000.

The spokesman said Prothro

He reported that 'Baker ran 18

passes for 127 yards.

support for a reduced season of
153 games. -
Fred Haney, general manager:

the longer schedule. He said
cut m the number of games
plaved would not reduce trans
portation costs as some officials
believe.
A reduction to 133 games would
mean the loss of a date with each
of the other nine teams. The
schedule, prior to the expansion
to 10 teams this- year, was 154
games.
