An army expert says the best
thing to do when a poisonous
snake bites you is the hardest
thing to do. It is to relax.
Animals are a lot smarter
than human beings when it
comes to reacting to snake bites,"
the Army expert, Sgt. I.C. Bui
Kennedy said.
I'ye seen quite a few dogs,
bitten by rattlers, settle down in
some mud and lie there quietly.
Several days later they emerge
as good as new.
Snake venom breaks down the
red corpuscles when it enters the
blood stream. Only when it reach
es the heart is it fatal. Kennedy
advises calmness for the snake

This is a fire department's term
for the general problem of chil
dren (and sometimes their par
ent j) turning on hydrants to keep
cool. ,
Philadelphia officials say that
in addition lo lowered water pres
sure in the hydrants, with consc
quent hampering of fire-fighting
efficiency, there are other dan
gers involved in illegal use of the
hydrants. i
Disease can come from chil
dren lying in gutters and allow
ing the hydrant water running
down the street picking up filth
to flow over them.

Huge Turtles
KUALA LUMPUR (UPD - The
world's largest turtles may be in
danger of becoming extinct.
But the Malayan Nature Society
is making efforts to save the huge
reptiles, which weigh a ton when
full grown. Thev usually lay their
eggs in the wjrm sand along
Malaya's cast coast.
Recently, a nature society group,
headed by 'Prof. J. R. Hendrlck
son, head of the department of
zoology at the University of Ma
laya here, put 2,000 baby Ju'rtlcs
into Uif sea.
According to Hendricksnn, only
about 1,000 pairs of the full grown
giant turtles are believed lo be in
existence. The reason for their
small number is because the un
varying egg laying habits of the
turtles are well known and Ihcirj
eggs are almost always stolen.
Hendrickson's team put the 2,000
baby turtles to sea near Dungun
on the east coast of Malaya. Skin
divers who followed the turtles re
ported thev were "swimrriing pow
erfully." i ' '
The baby turtles, which weighed
only about one ounce apiece, were
placed in the water by several
boats and over a large area so
as not to attract schools of fish.
"Their firght for survival is a
lough one because their enemies
are many, but ine care we nave
taken to distribute the babies so
that they will not attract schools
of fish may minimize their casual
tics." Hendrickson said.
Many of the turtles were marked
with yellow paint so they can be
identified later.

Navy officer.
It's part of a Navy experiment
to ease the officer shortage and
to learn what shipboard jobs wom
en can dtl as well as men.
She'll be going to sea early next
vear. and probably w ill remain on
