Weed Mayor Appoints
City Plan Commission
WEED The first city plan-
ning board was approved by the
council at the Thursday nigm,
Feb. 23, meeting. Seven men
named by Mayor J. I. Kersey
for the planning commission el
fective March 16 and their terms
of office include Pete Belcastro,
John Rogers, one year: Alfred
Linville, R. G. Gaynor, 2 years:
Harrv Hedeepeth, Dr. M. J.
Greenshields, three years, and Da
vid Sbarbaro, four years. The
board members may be reap
pointed to office at end of desig
nated term and all reappoint
ments will be for a four-year
term.
Richard Millington, Mount Shas
ta, was interviewed at the meet
ing end retained by the council
as city auditor.
A. B. Cottar, sheriff, offered
the cooperation of his office to
the city and stressed the need of
an efficient communication syst
em in Weed. He pointed out the
vital position of Weed in the
center of the county for law en
forcement emergencies and the
need for around the clock com
munication service.
The council passed a resolution
to dissolve the Shasttna Fire Pro
tection District. The commissiion-
ers of the district will now an
swer to the city council and will
meet with the council at the next
regular meeting March 2.
A standby ordinance to provide
for collection of Uniform Sales
Tax monies by the state was
adopted. The ordinance is to be ef
fected if and when the county

banks creating possible danger to
drainage and causing erosion to
Lake Street. The condition also
presents a sanitary hazard if I
blocking slowed the year-round
free flowing of the creek as it is
used upstream for sewage efflu
encc.
Steps to stabilize the creek and
control dumping in the creek will
be studied and an ordinance pre
pared by the city attorney, Wil
liam E. Heidcwald, for reading at
the March 2 meeting.

SCOTT VALLEY
The Scott Valley Grange mem
bers met at the grange hall Feb,
15 for their regular meeting with
Helen Lewis, master, conducting.
David Mallow reported on a
project to repaint the picnic
tables and make a picnic area at
the hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Davis
presented a skit, "Get Off My
Lap." Other members read poems.
Dorothy Grune, lecturer, made
a valentine box and valentines
were exchanged.
Members with birthdays in Feb
ruary were Mrs. Bonnie East
lick, Mrs. Dorothy Grune and
Mrs. Warren Nelson. Each was
served a heart-shaped cake.
After the meeting a potluck
dinner was served.

three men to death for war
crimes. They were accused of kill
ing thousands during the German
occupation of Lithuania.

ETNA III
Etna became the first HI 4-H
Club in the county on Feb. 20.
President Wendy Cassidy called
the meeting to order.
Carl Hammond led the flag
salute and Mcrrie Gomes led the
4-H pledge.
Committee reports were given
by Fred Miles on the planting of
locust trees: Elizabeth Dudley,
planting of wild flowers, and Nan
cy Mathews on the work to be
done on an old cemetery.
We discussed our 4-H dance
which is to be held March 11,
at 8:30 pm. until 12. We are
charging 25 cents. Committee
chairmen are Merric Gomes, dec
orations: Mike Cassidy, refresh
ments; Rulh Mathews, publicity;
Paul Vaugh, entertainment; Shar
on Young, serving; Tommy Hay-
den, money, and Clint Custer,
clean-up.
After discussion we voted to be
come a HI 4-H Club. ,
The 4-H week window display
was discussed and a committee
was appointed to put it up. We
are going to go to church March
5, in uniform.
We voted to have our project
March 18.
Mrs. Dudley reported that we
wouldn't pick up pine cones.
We talked about the leader's
training meeting to be held Feb,
23. at 8 p.m. Committees appoint
