Ohio State still is the No. 1 team
in the nation, and no doubt about
it. But the Buckeyes have to give
up some of the spotlight to Niaga
ra, the No. 1 team of the moment
in college basketball.
It was the Purple Eagles,
coached by nice guy Taps Gal-;
lagher, who snubbed a jinx and
surely drew a nod from the Na
tional Invitation Tournament by
upsetting second-ranked, NCAA
bound St. Bonaventure 87-77 Sat
urday. The Bonnios had won 12 in a
row and had lost only to unbeaten
Ohio State, the weekly unanimous
first-place choice in The Asso
ciated Press poll, by a mere two
points, 84-82. in the Holiday Festi
val in New York.
Not only did Niagara whomp
the Bonnies by 10 points, but they
did it in St. Bonaventure's cosy
home court at Olean, N.Y. where
the Bonnies had put away 99 con
secutive victories. St. Bonaven
ture hadn't lost in 13 years and
13 days at home, and it was the
same Gallagher and Niagara that
last came out a winner there.
With Niagara (15-4) waiting at
the telephone for a call from the
NIT to fill one of the four berths

NEW YORK (UPI) - Valery
(Beau) Brumel, Russia's human
sputnik, today promised he'll
rocket to a new high jump record
in the Knights of Columbus track
meet at Madison Square Garden
Friday night.
Brumel outclassed John Thomas
for the third lime in the National
AAU indoor track and field cham
pionships at the Garden last Sat
urday night, equalling Thomas'
meet record with a leaf) of seven
feet, two inches.
A record crowd of 16,243 moaned
loudly when Thomas failed to
clear 7-1 three times after passing
the seven-foot mark on his firstj
try.
The Brumcl-Thomas duel was
billed as the feature attraction of
the Nationals but the broad jump
another U.S.-Russian battle
produced the most drama and a
world record leap by Olympic
champion Ralph Boston of Tennes

Lippy Leo Gets Familiar Boot;

Baseball's spring training sea

lost his first argument with an um
pire. It was only the Los Angeles
Dodgers' first intra-squad game
Sunday but there was Leo, back
in harness after five years, man
aging one of the squads from the
third base coaching box and
up to an old trick.
In familiar fashion Leo began
to dub out the white lines mark
ing tile coaching box and then
wander along the third base line
at will. Over the years the ex
Brooklyn and New York Giant pi
lot has pulled the same trick de
fying countless umpires in an ef
fort to steal a sign or gain some
other advantage.
Plate Umpire Jim Duncan is
slated to do his umpiring in the
Class D Midwest League this
year but the fellows who'll be
playing in it might just as well
understand here and now that
they're not going to get away
with anything. The rules state
that the coach must remain with
in the limits of his prescribed
urea and the umpire is supposed
to enforce the rules.
Duncan warned Durocher. No
dice. He warned him again. Still
no dice. And so. without further
ado, the Class D umpire swept up

"It is. only human to take things

you need somebody around to keep
you alert and alive and that will
be my job."
The full Giant roster was on

ling and running for the first two
weeks.
"Take care of the legs," the
manager said, "and the arms will
take care of themselves."
The Giants got the last real rest
of the season Sunday and the

discounts the Cincinnati Reds ex
cept Manager Freddie Hutchinson.
In all the pre-scason forecasts,
Ihe five clubs picked to battle it
out for Die National League pen
nant are the Pirates, Braves,
Dodgers, Giants and Cardinals.
The Reds, who finished sixth
last season, never even get a
call. Hutchinson, however, feels
they deserve one.
"The Dodgers finished seventh
in 1958 and won the pennant in
1959," Hutchinson reasoned. "In a
league as tough and evenly bal
anced as this one there aren't
any dark horses.
"We all knew back in 1958 that
the Dodgers were not as bad as
that seventh place finish made
them look. And I know, and my
players know, lhat the Reds
weren't as bad as that sixth place
finish last year indicated.
"But I'm not being the optimis
tic spring training camp manager
you meet every year this time
when I say that I, think my club
can do it."
The former major league pitch
ing star is confident the potential
is there.
"Last year," he recalled, "we
had the hitting it takes at times,
the pitching it takes at limes, and
the speed and defense it takes at
limes. We never could put all of
them together. Now If I can get
all of those things meshed into
one unit we aren't going to have
to take a back seat to anyone."
