CROWDED SKY The list of American satellites grows
longer with the orbiting of Samos II, designed to take re
connaissance photographs of the earth. America has now
entered its third year In the satellite age. Explorer I was
the first successful one. The next, Vanguard I, is still
transmitting. Three "artificial planets," one of them Rus
sian, are still in their courses around the sun. In addition,
numerous other satellites in the Discoverer series have
been launched. These are not intended to stay in orbit but
re tests of recovery systems. So far three Discoverer
Instrument capsules have been returned to earth.

POETS
CORNER
WINTERS
Are Ihe winters any different
Than they were long years ago?
Or have I just grown older
And can't remember about our
snow?
Seems it snowed then in Novem
ber,
And it never melted away.
We still saw it every morning
Until the next Easter day.
Now the snow does not get deep
Neither does it last as long.
Are the winters any different
Or am I the one that's wrong?
Jennie Charles,
1749 Menlo Way.
CHILD OF GOD
A child is like the morning star
That lights the way to love's
sweet door
That opens countless lockets fair
That clasps the heart encircled
there.
A child is. like the onus bright
That glitters through the aging
night
That tramples modesty and pride
The loving cup of youth denied.
A child is but the living strain
Of life that courses through the
vein
Its hunger fed on tender love
And mercy shown from God
above. . j
A child is love, the emblem ol
A higher, nobler, lasting love
The old but wither -and decay 1
The young in heart no longer!
gray. j
A child is like the flower of hope
That opens Id the bugle's note
That springs the well contentment
lies
That soars to glory in the skies.
A child is but the reed that
flows
The tender shoot that upwards
grows
That flourishes in valleys green
That's nourished by the hand un
seen.
A child is living proof of God
Made in his image and endowed
With grace and beauty undefiled
Humble, sweet, his manner mild.
A child is poet's verse unfurled
To herald in a heavenly world
The planted seed survives the rust
The implement of God in trust.

A STRING OF PEARLS
Beautiful! More beautiful than
Any gem, any flower, any ocean.
Rare, more rare 4han any jewel,
Precious as a diamond, as a set
ting sun.
Set in a setting of deepest blue
Yet set in many colors.
Clasp by an unseen string,
Yet as strong as a man.
Mysterious as the unknown,
Yet friendly as a spring breeze.
Wild as the wildest animal,
Yet calm as the calmest sea.
These pearls are more valuable
Than the rarest pearls,
Yet they are free
To the finder of the Pacific Isles.

Young birds do not have to be
taught to fly. However, adult birds
try to lure the young from their
nests to encourage them to follow
their natural instincts.
