Big Gray Box
Gives Doctor
Body Functions
LOS ANGELES (AP)-A big
gray box that does everything but
tell you to "say ah!" was demon
strated publicly for the first
Tuesday at Cedars of Lebanon
Hospital.
It lakes your pulse and tem
perature and listens to your heart
with greater accuracy than the
most skilled physician.
The gray box is an electron
digital computer. From wires
taped to your skin It senses res
piration rate, heart rate, vein
pressure, artery pressure and
temperature. It al.u senses and
reports room temperature.
All uicse things are printed on
a roll of paper and simultaneously
displayed on a panel.
The machine has been used In
monitor the physical condition of
patients during heart surgery. A
new model will enable a nurse at
her desk to maintain a constant
check on as many as five pa
tients in an after-surgery recovery
room far down the hall.
Dr. Louis G. Fields. nhv.w.i
developed the machine.
Some oil workers in Vnwnwli
