Ike Becomes His Own Chauffeur,
Not Behind Wheel In Two Decades
ALBANY, Ga. (AP) Amid a
lot of good-natured ribbing from
his hunting companions, former
President Dwight D. Eisenhower
drove a car Tuesday for the first
time in more than 20 years.
Eisenhower,' gradually easing
into the unaccustomed role of a
private citizen, was the chauffeur
for the four-man party in driving
the quarter mile from his host's
Blue Springs plantation house to
the stables.
"Look out boys, duck," George
E. Allen jokingly warned news
men as the former President pi
loted a station wagon out of the
driveway. Allen is a Gettysburg,
Pa., neighbor of Eisenhower who
made the trip here with him Mon
day in the private plane of their
host, W.' Alton Jones. 1
Eisenhower said it was the first ;
time he had driven since 1940. . !
"But I'm very good with a golf
cart,'' he jested, referring to the
motorized cart he usually uses on
the links. j
The sun broke through a rift in!
the clouds for the first time as
the hunting party, including Coca
Cola executive William E. Robin-
son, mounted mule-drawn hunting
Wool Men
Challenged
To 'Battle
. I
DENVER (AP) - Members of
the National Wool Growers Asso-1
ciation were told Tuesday the
iheep, industry must decide
promptly whether "we are going,
to fight for success or accept de-
feat." '
The challenge came from Don
Clyde of Heber City, Utah, presi
dent of the American Sheep Pro
ducers Council, in addressing the i
association's annual convention. '
Clyde said there is "no doubt
the promotion and advertising pro
gram 1s doing the job it was in
tended to do expand the demand j
for the sheep man's products." !
He said there is a wide accept
ance of products of the sheep in
dustry, yet prices are far from;
favorable. "This is an enigma j
which' the sheep industry must!
Solve," Clyde said.
The Producers Council, Clyde
taid, has a budget- of approxi
mately $3 million .a year with all j
sheepmen contributing. He saidi
the promotion program should be
kept a part of the national wool
act, which is up for extension in'
Congress this year. 1 !
J.: R. Broadbent of Salt Lake
City, chairman of the council's
lamb committee, said sheep pro
ducers should not judge the pro
motion program in the "cold light
of live prices alone." .,
"The fact remains that lamh at
retail has enjoyed a fairly com
fortable price position and has:
moved well Into channels of con
sumption," Broadbent said: 1
A Utah State University market
ing specialist told the association
producers have been "misled and
discouraged from actively devel
oping their own market program
by statements of myths."
Dr. Morris H. Taylor said lamb
producers have permitted "indi
viduals and firms to organize the!
markets for lamb in their own self
interest, without regard to the real
needs and wishes of lamb pro
ducers." Taylor listed the myths as: that
Supply and demand automatically
determine price and there is
"nothing you can do about it;"
there is a free market of perfect
competition; a satisfactory mar
ket structure can be maintained
by legislative and legal action;
maintenance of liberty and dem
ocracy are associated with each
producer personally marketing his
lambs.
"There is much evidence," Tay
lor said, "that producers have lost
bargaining in moving to more di
rect selling and a large per cent
( producers doing their own sales

wagons. Eisenhower Used a 20
gauge shotgun.
The former President expressed
surprise at the interest in his ac
tivities exhibited by the 10 news
men on hand at the isolated
15,000-acre plantation.'
"My goodness," he said, but
posed willingly for photographers.
Eisenhower, looking tanned and
fit, seemed to be enjoying himself
immensely.
Eisenhower fumbled with the
switch a moment when first get
ting behind the wheel, but soon
had the vehicle rolling smoothly
toward the stables.
Eisenhower bagged his daily
limit of 10 quail Monday within a
short time after arriving here.
