May End
Strikes
FONTANA. Calif. AP - The
Kaiser Steel Corp. and (he United
Steelwoikcrs of America are ask
ing the public to sit in perma
nently on future relations between
company and union.
The goal: to eliminate strikes.
Both Edgar F. Kaiser, board
chairman of Kaiser Steel, and
David J. McDonald, union presi
dent, have high hopes for the
plan. So does the chief represent
ative of the public on the company-union
Long Hange Commit
tee, Dr. George W. Taylor, Uni
versity of Pennsylvania profes
sor. He is chairman of the com
mittee and headed President Ei
senhower's Taft-Hartley board of
inquiry during the 1959 steel
strike.
"We're all hopeful this will
minimize if not eliminate strikes
over renewal of agreements,"
Taylor told a news conference at
the Kaiser Steel plant here Fri
day. The Long Range Committee,
set up after the 1959 strike, has
equal representation from com
pany, union and public. Its over
all purpose continues unchanged
to recommend ways of sharing
the company's future economic
progress equitably among stock
holders, employes and the public.
Spokesmen stressed that in ask
ing the public's representatives to
take part, when necessary, in fu
ture collective bargaining, nei
ther company nor union is bind
ing itself to follow the public
members' advice.
Specific grievances will not be
handled by the committee.
Kaiser said: "We have found
that sitting down together three
each of us a better and more
detailed understanding of what
subjects help keep the peace."
Both sides indicated public sen
timent is an important factor in
settlement of labor disputes.
The committee includes as oth
er public members Dr. John T.
Dunlop, Harvard University pro
fessor, and David L. Cole, former
director of the Federal Mediation
and Conciliation Service.
Both Kaiser and McDonald said
they hope and believe a new con
tract can be negotiated, without
a strike, before the present one
expires July l.
In another development, Mc
Donald announced the appoint
ment of his assistant, Marvin J.
Miller, to replace Arthur J. Gold
berg on the committee. Goldberg
resigned after President-elect
John F. Kennedy designated him
as secretary of labor.
The third union member of the
committee is Charles J. Smith,
a West Coast district director.
Company members are Kaiser,
and Vice Presidents C.F. Borden
and E.E. Trefethan Jr.

Mint Fields
Infested
With Wilt
CORVALL1S (AP) - Nearly
every peppermint field in the Wil
lamette Valley is infested with
mint wilt, an agricultural scien
tist told the Oregon Essential Oil
Growers League Friday night.
As a result of that infestation,
said C. E. Horner, some 5,000 to
6.000 acres of peppermint produc
tion in the valley will be shifted
to wilt-free areas in the next few
years.
The problem is increasingly,
serious, said Homer, a plant
pathologist at Oregon State CoI-
lege, and can be solved only by!
development of wilt resistant vari
eties of mint Research along that
line is promising, he said.
Other speakers told the 130 del
egates at the final session of the
association's annual meeting that
higher prices for the mint crop
are in the offing for the next two
years.
New officers were elected, and
they included: Ed Ammon, Jef
ferson, president; Arthur R. Vun-
gen. Madras, vice president; Ian
C. MacSwan. Corvallis. secretary;
James Gossler. Springfield, treas
urer; and Morris Funke, Eugene,
and Richard Nelson, Nyssa, directors.
