Harness Snaps,
Window Washer
Left Dangling
PORTLAND (AP) - Part of a
harness apparatus gave way and
window washer dangled for 10
minutes today lrom the fourth
floor of the YMCA Building in
downtown Portland.
"I wasn't too scared." said Dar
rell VanLom, 37, after he had
lowered himself to safety with a
rope dropped to him by a city
employe.
VanLom said he was soaping
(he outside of a window on the
fourth floor when one of the tun
window frame plugs into which his
harness waft hooked pulled loose.
That left the 215-pound VanLom
dangling 3'i floors above Taylor
Street.
Firemen arrived with a ladder
truck at the same time that a
city employe raced up to the
fourth floor and dropped a rope
to VanLom. The window washer
lowered himself to the third floor.
kicked out a window and was
pulled inside by his assistant.
A building employe later told
newsmen that VanLom had decid
ed to wash windows from the in
side the rest of the day. But a
few minutes later, newsmen found
VanLom washing outside windows
again on the fourth floor. "I just
told her that because she was so
nervous," he said.
